Does it make a difference how long you have your application completed? I've heard stories from guys who have gotten the interview and they all had the right connections. I've never heard that anything else is very important to getting an interview. Has anyone here been able to get an interview without first having a friend with some influence at CAL deliver your resume to the secret place, say a few magic words, or do the hire-my-best-buddy dance?

I'm not sure about the specifics of what it takes to get the call for an interview, but I am guessing you need someone to physically walk your resume into a chief pilot and make contact with them to say 'hire this guy because I say so.' I have had my online app completed for about 6 months and was a past intern there with a letter of rec from my old boss, since he is in the downtown HQ maybe he doesnt make many trips the the airport to see the chief? If anyone figures it out let me know too!

Affect of recent flight time (or lack thereof)
All, any ideas on how not having recent flight time affects hire-ability at CAL? I haven't flown in almost 5-yrs due to the dreaded staff job (USAF). I'm working on doing some local light A/C flying but not sure how much that'll help. I have 4600+ TT with most of it in KC-135 (similar to B-707). Also, does anyone have the CAL pilot list they could send me so I can see if I know anyone for recs?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

I would think as long as you meet the min time and can pass the sim it should be no problem. I will ask powers to be and get back on this forum. Toad, contact me privately on this forum or give me contact info and I will get you a copy of the most recent seniority list.

Not so. Nobody really walks anything in since all resumes are taken online. I would suggest you contact your old boss and ask him to give the chief pilots office a call for you to inquire where you stand. That's all you need to do - really!

hey calcapt,
If you happen to be in the office, can you confirm or deny that interviews for the most part are done until sometime in the fall. I was told that I am on the short list, but timing must not have been on my side. From what I have heard, it seems I wont be hearing anything until sometime this fall. Just curious of what the actual numbers might be. Thanks.

CAL Pilot Info
calcapt,
I guess I'm unable to PM until I have 25 posts. So, my email is [email protected]. Thanks for looking into this for me. A friend at FedEx asked the same question there for me. The chief pilot pulled up my application and said I would be competitive if it weren't for the lack of recent experience. They suggested I go fly for corporate or a regional for a couple of years then try again. I'm thinking, you've got to be kidding. I'm going to go work for peanuts for two years to regain my "recent experience" and then get hired at FedEx (or other major carrier) only to sit sideways for the next 6-months to 3-yrs depending on the route I take. I'm not sure of the sense that makes. I would think my 1,000+ instructor/evaluator hours in heavy ME jets and turbo-prop and 4600+ TT would speak to my abilities. So, I guess a guy with half the hours could get hired before me just because he current/qualified. That's enough whining I guess. Thanks again. Toad

Dirk,
My guy at CAL called me last week and said the same thing. He went to talk to his Asst CP about my app and he said that they have about everyone they need right now but that they will be ramping up again at the end of the summer. By "everyone they need" I do not know if that means they have called everyone they need or they have a stack of guys they will be calling before the summer. I know this only half helps but I know what I know and I too am waiting for an opportunity. Good Luck
