Any continental pilots here been based in Guam? It looks like an interesting place to be based out of for a little bit. Flying 737's around the south pacific seems like alot of fun. Any continetal pilots whats your take on it? Is it a senior base?

There is no freeze for any pilot as long as you bid up. In other words you can move from the F/O on the 737 to the 757 to the 777 to PIC on the 737 to the 757 to the 777. In other words, maybe less confusing, you can move up in pay catogory with less than 2 years on the equipment. To bid down in pay catagory, you have to be on the equipment for two years.

Default Equipment freeze

Thanks calcapt. Just trying to figure on what aircraft to pick if given the choice. Sounds like picking 737 would get the better schedule sooner, then go to 757 when able to hold a line. How often do you guys get awarded seat changes? Is it a monthly thing, every 3 months , yearly?

The thanks goes to Calpilot but that's OK. Unless you are real motivated to fly the 757/767 ASAP, given the choice, I would go to the 737 and then the 756 down the road if you still want to fly it. I have flown both and the 757 is a wonderful airplane but, you will get a greater variety of flying and have a choice of more city pairs on the 737. In my opinion the schedules are better sooner on the 737 and the only place you have a chance of getting a 756 bid out of training would be Newark. There are some pretty junior 737 FO's in Houston but I'm not sure if Houston bids are being awarded out of training. Bids (opportunities to change seats and bases) are supposed to occur about every six months, and so far that has been pretty close. If you live in the Northeast and don't mind being in the newark area and on reserve longer you may OK on the 756 if that's your thing.

lots of replies about guam but i'll sum-up mine: run away as fast as you can. guam is a pit and the guys out there are a bit strange. it's a junior base and virtually impossible to commute to/from. everything you are used to is substandard in a big way. power failures are a way of life as are pot-holed roads, indifferent service, canned food as a mainstay, poor educational and medical facilities, and very high prices for everything. on the plus side, it's a good place to jump off for non-reving throughout asia.

Amen! Kill Bill is right. Good for a select few - substandard for most!

i always liked to think of air mike as the french foreign legion of CAL. of course, i flew the MNL cargo operation and that was the french foreign legion of air mike; a real hoot if you like 12 year-old girls--or boys.

There are new hire 756 guys in Houston, and more to come. Guam at the moment is very senior, for some reason people want to stay there. The big knock on the 737 EWR flying is the trips are rarely commutable on both end opposed to the 756 trips which are usually commutable on both. Reserves (at least F/Os) in EWR are RARELY flying. Everybody is running into the 10 day problem (hi mins must fly every 10 days until over 100hrs). That's how they are assigning trips. Very over staffed right now, but it is all in time for the summer flying. IAH f/os r flying all the time.
