JetBlue Hiring Minimums

Running Out?
Just attended an aviation alumni committee meeting with the chairman of the aviation department at SIU. Here are some interesting statistics that came from that meeting.
The Chinese government approach SIU last year with a request to train 500 Chinese to become pilots (Comm, Instrument, ME). SIU had to turn them down because they don't have even enough instructors to train the 211 students they have enrolled currently.
The A&P program turned down a similar offer from the Peruvian government to train and certify 300 mechanics to FAA standards.
Every week the A&P department receives calls for mechanics that the school cannot provide. In fact Southwest called last week. SIU just placed an avionics guy at Rockwell Collins: starting pay 60K with a 12K signing bonus.
While the current "shortage" of trained pilots and mechanics has yet to manifest itself in better working conditions and pay, the fact is the world is running out of pilots and mechanics. It could be that the older side of the age curve in the current generation will probably miss out on any benefit. But if you're young and strong, the future looks bright.

Read what they wrote:
"we wanted to be able to consider an applicant who has limited PIC time because he/she has been at a carrier for many years as a First Officer, yet unable to upgrade because of limited growth. Pilots with military helicopter time have extensive experience with “glass cockpits”, FMS, and GPS navigation systems. We felt that eliminating pilots from consideration in the two above examples would be eliminating some potentially outstanding candidates."

"10,000 Applications on file." Right.

There are plenty of SIC's that got into airlines fairly early in the game and never upgrade because of no growth. I was at Air Jamaica for 9 years in the right seat. Great job, just no PIC time. The need wasn't there to upgrade any faster. JetBlue is aware of applicants out there that can bring major 320 and 190 time to the table, but they didn't qualify due to the PIC restrictions. So there you go.

The VP of flight ops data about mins is nearly two years old. Since then, things have changed. Since the company is not currently hiring, there are no new mins presented, but based on the qualifications of our few 2009 new hires, You'll likely need PIC from mil, 91 turbine, or 121 turbine and a hefty TT. Not always, though, as this company traditionally likes who you are as much as what you are. Hence, the importance here for face time. If you don't meet the company reps, in a highly competitive hiring environment, then its probably a disservice to your chances (at least here) relative to those who did meet JetBlue contacts. Again, no hiring yet announced.
