Continental plans to become the first U.S. carrier to introduce nonstop service to India under a new U.S.-India open-skies agreement.
The carrier said it will launch daily service between Newark and New Delhi from Oct. 31 pending government approval. It will use Boeing 777 aircraft with 48 BusinessFirst and 235 economy seats on the route.
The flights will be Continental's second-longest at 7,323 miles, beaten only by the airline's 8,060-mile Newark-Hong Kong flights. Flying time will be 13 hours 55 minutes from Newark to New Delhi, and 15 hours 50 minutes on the return flight.
India and the U.S. initialed an open-skies agreement in January, although it has yet to be formally signed (DAILY, Jan. 19). Northwest and Delta already serve India with one-stop code-share flights. Northwest and KLM offer flights from Minneapolis to Mumbai and New Delhi via Amsterdam, and Northwest plans to add Bangalore flights in October.
