If you are in the 121 world, for a final time, only turbine PIC time really counts. It doesn't matter whether it's turbo-prop or jet PIC time. Just get it. As fast as possible (meaning the quickest upgrade).

Remember, the captains sitting on major airline hiring boards that came up through civilian 121 flying almost all flew turbo-props, not jets. They don't care about jet time. That isn't a question they even ask.

And, yes, UA is looking at and has hired turbo-prop captains.
please, at this point it's not what you flew, its all who you know especially over at CAL, not necessarily knocking them, but lets call a spade a spade. Getting a job with CAL is all based on who "walked" your stuff in. I know of many people that went over to CAL with only a few months of 121 time period, forget about PIC time...............(knowing the right person is key at every airline, not just CAL)

I would say most majors would like to see a guy with both, It won't be a deciding factor, but I would think they prefer Jet time, but in no way will Turbo-Prop time be looked down on. Look there is always going to be someone with more time/experience then you, you getting a job with a major is not as simple as how much PIC time you have, and in what airplane. I would say Timing and luck will have more of an impact on your career then your time in a jet/T-prop. I hear a lot of people say get the PIC time ASAP, going to a regional for PIC alone could be a mistake...............

This is very true. It's not just with CAL but with every airline. The best flight time you can get is with someone with connections to get you to another job.

Connections are important. In the new-hire classes I've seen, everyone had someone who recommended them. And everyone, with the exception of one in my class, had turbine PIC part 121 or military aircraft commander time. Other than that, there was and still is no preference at CAL as to whether your time was spent in turbo-props or jets. The classes have been very balanced with both types of experience. There are three things one should do at a regional if their desire is to fly for a major - get turbine PIC time as fast as possible, network network network, and keep yourself out of trouble.

Best advice, I agree. To all you guys that are thinking about joining, or getting involved with your union, I would highly recommend it, I have learned a lot and so far have met a lot of great guys, and i haven't even started my term yet. I am sure in the future I will be able to get some help from some of the guys I am working with in the union

Also get two weeks out in Vegas and the company buys your trips

Everything so far has been, shall we say, very illuminating. Thanks a million and Happy New Year!

To add on to this, and I'll be quite blunt............if the individual recommending you has recommended someone who was hired and left CAL for another carrier after training, your recommendation is now pretty much worthless, just as having a rec from someone who has (in the companies opinion) "abused" sick leave. While you may be walking on touchy ground asking the person who might recommend you about these things, it could save you being overlooked and hoping for a call that will never come. But the most important thing is TO NEVER GIVE UP.

I just sent my app in to Emirates and was rejected in 30 seconds because of what must be my mostly turbo prop time. Over 6000 hrs, 3400 PIC (all military), plus 250 or so jet. The requirement says 4000 turbine.
Between that and the age 65 deal Im about ready for a career change....
