As of 7/26/2007, UAL has 950 qualified, confirmed applicants, for the only 100 position to hire.......as per a memo recv'd today in our company email. Kinda suprises me that many applied......but hey good luck to all!

I hope the potential new hires are better are formulating a sentences than you. What exactly were you trying to say? Do I need a decoder ring to figure that sentence out "c"aptain?
Real original username. I bet your personal email is "jetguy" or something along those lines.

The current contract is being addressed and with any luck we might see a return to more normal wages in the future. What is nice to know is that our pilot group is able to negotiate and we did achieve some of the highest pay rates in the industry just a few years ago. I suspect that may be where your animosity comes from. You most likely are working for a ACMI operation that lives and dies by the spoils of the contract airline. You obviously believe you are special with your 747 avatar and Capt in you your username. Don't tell me you have personalized aviation themed license plates also. Define yourself by what you do and you risk the reality of everyone thinking you are a deedledork.
Now go down to the bar and tell all the girls you are a "jet pilot".

Time and circumstances are quite different today than they were in 2000. The .com bust had not yet arrived, and quite frankly the CEO back then was not up to the task and all the "big-wigs" had their eye on USAir, and NOT the bouncing ball, the operation of UAL.
To me however, the biggest issue you are facing is that the leadership you need is simply not there. Without naming names, the MEC Chairman in 2000 had forgotten more than those who followed him ever knew. He was also very willing to go toe to toe with the company. The leadership after he left simply didn't have the backbone.
But to be fair, the circumstances facing the industry and certainly UAL have simply favored management since 9/11. The events of that very sad day gave airline managements the hammer they never had before.
But pendulms do swing back, and is your current leadership capable and willing to take advantage of it? I simply don't see the existing leadership as one able to take on such a fight.
JMHO.

You want me to put my bag where?
Its a tough choice to go to a major these days. The options are not so great. I can see the commuters taking a look but if you have 15 days off and no commute...then why start at a major when your pay will be more than halved?
I agree that United has some very difficult tasks to tackle in the future. Harmonious labor relation is a term not in their dictionary. Their management has merger written into its manifesto. No aircraft orders in the future.
I am sure there are happy people...especially the ones at the top of the list that have great things to say...but you need to look at all parts of the seniority list. And from the whole seniority list...how many would say.."Its a great time to be at United!" with a smile?
A change in day to day business in need at UAL. The company is a mammoth and is being targeted for business pieces by other airlines. Any change to such a mammoth takes a change in momentum. And the momentum required to move such a mammoth will be huge with innovative management.

I set my UAL parking brake for the last time several years ago after 35+ years of service, but allow me a few comments...
