Psssssssht? these days? Has it ever been in the 21st century? Like I said I'm not saying they are not deserving of such, just merely saying those who I know are well above that Glassdoor snapshot you posted. I'm not sure I would really gospelize that data....
Have you ever saw what it says for Airline Pilot?
Luckily we have this website for more accurate info, but keep in mind those outside our industry may think that is an accurate representation.

Yes, heard Ornstien say it in person. Never heard of Childs or Atkins saying any such thing... the latter are good businessmen, understood the nature of the game but never hated on the players. They weren't going to hand out much free money when they didn't have to, but they didn't resent you when they did.

Unskilled labor, street hires. I'm not being harsh, it's reality. I looked over my own airline's app/requirements. Main takeaways: If you have tattoos make sure you can cover them and you have to be tall enough to get emergency equipment unaided (zero mention of what that actual height is). That's it. Other than that, apply, make it through, CJO, class, 6.5 weeks training.

I think I've been pretty clearly pro-union all along. Advocated such on these forums almost 20 years ago when OO had a union drive (the last one?), even though I realize the limitations of regional unions.

I assume he said it more than once, and he made a habit of doing a "welcome" aboard speech to new hires back in the day. So yes I was there along with everybody else in my class. Also had Jerry Atkin on my JS once, but we didn't talk about pilot pay. High-credit commutable 4-days often had a SGU victory lap on the back end. Aviation is a small world, do it for a few decades and you'll meet some people.

then back to your original post, how is a union a “double-edged sword” in the case of a downturn that being in a non-union shop wouldn’t be?

It wasn't a comment on unions, it was a comment on the nature of seniority-based labor systems. Having done both, a good union shop is way better in almost all respects than white collar corporate America, but job portability is a glaring exception. I was not implying that we should de-certify all of our unions

Yes. It was a shoe-string Mom & Pop commuter airline. He literally was trying to sell us that low wages meant turnover, upward movement, PIC, and calls from majors. He tried to make the case that it was good for him and good for our career progression.
