It is amazing how few people get this.

If the list is stagnant, yes… But as a seniority list grows - presuming international growth is included - that “number” will naturally drop. It’s better to use a certain % seniority, rather than a particular number. % is typically pretty stable over time, at least where I work. We are about 40% bigger now than we were a decade ago

You’re not wrong, but that’s making a lot of assumptions. We can assume all day that one thing or another will remain the same or change. The fleet mix, the per-tail staffing, the route structure, the market share, the profitability, etc.

We know for a fact that everyone has to retire at some point.

I'm actually not making assumptions at all. It's actually happening at my airline, and will undoubtedly continue as we take more (growth) WB deliveries over the next couple of years.

But I get your original point, and it's not wrong. I was trying to point out there is a slight nuance to it when growth is underway.

True. But having a few thousand people behind you does help to insulate you from furloughs in a downturn. And get you a line quicker and often your base of choice in the interim. Still worthwhile considerations.

Yup. Senior NB FO is a comfortable position to ride out slow periods, especially living in base.

I know you’ve been around long enough to know that saying ‘undoubtedly’ about ANYTHING in this industry is - at best - an assumption.

Nuance is absolutely germane whether the discussion is about either relative or nominal seniority. But NOTHING is guaranteed except that - at some point - everyone has to leave.
