Vast difference between buudy passes and nonrev.
Nonrev, your immediate family are either travelling with you or know how it works.
Your "buddies" don't really know how it works (I know you told them, but they didn't really listen). They also tend to expectation bias that they will be getting on. When it doesn't work out, you're going to get to play emergency travel agent. On top of all that, they are very low priority on the list.
I would only give passes to people who had current or past airline connections, ie they know the drill. My best friend grew up in an airline household so he's good. Where I'd get in trouble is when my wife wanted passes for her friends, then all of the above applied. I finally imposed my own blackout dates... all months except Feb & Oct.

Fair enough, I misunderstood some of the prior posts as despising nonrev in general. I’ve had good luck with buddy passes too to a lesser extent, but as you mentioned, someone in the party has always had ties to nonrev backgrounds.

Depending where you are going , it may be not a lot more $ if you buys a ticket on F9 or spirit. I had a friend ask for a Buddy pass from LAS to ATL. About $80 Buddy pass, the ticket was $200. I told hike to just buy a ticket
I have a Delta pilot buddy and he buys a lot of tickets instead of trying to non rev between certain city pairs.

But I agree, don’t try to go to Florida during spring break, or most anywhere during June/July/August. Used with discretion, they can be very useful and make trips possible that are otherwise unafordable.

What's a "mandatory suggestion"??
Everyone in the business should know when, and when not, non-reving makes sense.
But sometimes there's kernels of corn in there....like the friend who scored F/C for 4 to Rome in July!!! Return flight had 4 seats together in coach. Whoaza!!

I give passes to people who know what they are in for…but proper planning is the key. Know the loads beforehand, know what other flight options there are, have a contingency plan. Don’t use them during holidays and peak travel seasons if possible.
The best use I’ve had for them is for specific friends that can’t afford a ticket. They know the game and are very appreciative.
