9/11 Anniversary Poll
Being that today’s anniversary triggers a lot of memories, and that i recently flew with a very young FO, I’m curious how many on the forum were employed as professional pilots on 9/11.
I was flying that day and remember it vividly.

I was an FO for USAir on the 737-300. Flying ABE-MCO. Diverted to CLT where we stayed for about 6 nights. Furloughed as a result in March 2002 and never went back.

Flying in from JAC-SLC, taxing in hear chatter on ground about delays back east, I think to myself not our problem, after deplaning ops called and said shut it down and bring your bags in, walked into the crew room to see the second hit on the TV.

Grounded the day of, but did a government trip a day later, coast to coast. No other traffic talking all th way into Dulles. Same westbound the next day. Approaching Portland, we were advised of a F15 doing an air intercept of a general aviation airplane.
The radio silence was surreal, as was the sound of a combat air patrol over the house, at home. Different times.

In 2001 I was 7 years out of flying and 6 years into my "temporary" law enforcement career, contemplating taking the plunge to get back in to flying. 9/11 and the aftermath put an end to that dream for another 19 years.
By coincidence my legs today were turns to AVL and CAE out of Philly so I flew right over DC 3 times. Looking down from the left seat of the mighty CRJ I had plenty to think about the events of 9/11 and the last 23 years.

On my way to work on I75. Instructor on the then new, B717. Radio 610 morning show, an airliner just hit the towers, NYC. My wife is on L/O lax, ORD based, 75/76. Wake her up in a room across from the Mexican place in Redondo Beach. Called me back after a name calling fit and said, another flight just got the 2nd. Drivers on a hiway known for angry ahole hell transformed suddenly to a long peaceful procession.
I like to spend Jan/Feb in the area I’m from. Walking along a riverfront park that looks remarkably the same, there’s a lifesize statue of a flight attendant lost aboard UA93. Here name is Cee Cee Lyles. She served as a Ft. Pierce, FL police officer 6 years before joining United. In your honor..
