Honestly, I hear this from reserve and guard pilots far more than I ever did from enlisted folks. Seems like a contest to see how they can up their rating. It’s disgusting. By all means, if you have an injury, apply for compensation, but embellishing what you have for the same of compensation is gross.

If it bothers you, there are many channels you can pursue to attempt to find justice. My suggestion would be to let it go. You'll feel a lot better.

Only bothers me to the extent that I wore the same uniform as these people.

Non Sequitur. I never said O's don't do it. I said it happens "most especially amongst the one-term enlistment folks". BTW, there are far more E than O in the military, so that's just simple math, if nothing else.

And how many E's do you actually hang out with relative to guard pilots...?

Again, absolutely no-one is defending Fraud. That pizzes me off too, and I'm in a position to have awareness of a lot more of it than probably anyone here (and no, I will not expound on why for privacy reasons). But I also think folks need to be very careful overgeneralizing and assuming you know all of what is in a veteran's medical records.

Other than the preference in knowing the product, veterans preference doesn’t apply to civilian jobs. It’s a government program for government jobs and largely excludes most pilots anyway.

Actually it is available for a non trivial number of private sector jobs, where the organization has federal (or state in some cases) contracts.

It's earned. Call it a benefit, privilege, whatever... it's earned.

I do know what you mean so please don't get me wrong. I flew with a guy who spent a good amount of time talking about his journey to up his rating and suggesting I do the same through a paid service. I admit that I did give it some thought but then decided to let my conscience be my guide and maybe save that for if I really need it later in life. Fraud/gross inflation exists, but only to the extent that it is allowed in order to capture the guys and ladies on the margins that maybe would have been rejected by the system in the old times. I am good with that. I don't like the perverse financial incentives around the whole thing, but that happens with any big government entitlement programs.
Our military is, for the first time since the 90's, not embroiled in any giant regional conflicts that involve large amounts of people. Hopefully that will last and maybe we can have a period of a normal peacetime military that is not out playing world police in forever wars. I suspect that as time goes on and VA health care gets stupid expensive, there may be an effort to rein in some of the generous benefits given over the last quarter century, but we will see.

You and I are talking about difference things. Veterans Preference, 5 U.S.C. § 211, only applies to federal civil service positions. Not all, but many. There are a host of other laws like VEVRAA that prescribe hiring practices with respect to veterans for federal contractors, but it is not the same as veterans preference.
