Jumpseaters: why enter the cockpit so early?
#71
Had this the other day...
pilot for the same company shows up asking for a ride in shorts, t shirt, and flip flops. He should know that attire is no where close to acceptable and he's with his whole family who is also non reving.
so do you ask him to change and if he cant kick him off?
no one should put the cpt in that position.

OMG. I couldn’t read 8 pages of coaching so did we get this settled about when and where to stand? And more importantly can someone give me FOM guidance reference we all obviously need? Thank god I don’t commute anymore. I have a hard enough time with KCM, I think many of you have to call in fatigued after all the epic commutes. Welcome aboard, courtesy and kindness appreciated but not necessary. I will use my superior airmanship to navigate to gauntlet of in hand vs. not threats and waiting area assignments.
WOW just WOW
PS where’s the FOM guide on trading cards?

This is such a strange thing to say. You are either comfortable letting them on the jumpseat or you are not. The only way I can see people feeling like they are being "put in that position" are the ones who really want to follow every rule, but also want to act like they are laid back and chill. You should know who you are by this point in your life.
Also, what do you think would happen if they sat in the jumpseat with shorts? Some airlines allow it, so passengers shouldn't really be a problem. What are the chances that there is an FAA inspector who is familiar with our FOM or a CP within sight of the flight deck during boarding? What do you actually think would happen if a CP saw this?

Why do you do this?
The etiquette used to be always come down with the last of the passengers so as not to crowd the flight deck.
In the last few years, I have seen an influx of jumpseaters who come down the jetbridge 35 mintues before departure and crowd the flight deck awkwardly staring over us as we do our business.
I can't really ask them to stand in the jetbridge because TSA regulations don't allow them to leave once boarded. Some stations enforce this more than others.
Please stop doing this.
Oh yeah... don't make me ask for your documents. Hand them over as you ask for a ride.

Whenever I ask for the JS... assuming I get the seat, I always -- always!! -- go stand out of the way in the jetbridge until the gate agent comes down to close out the flight. Sure, if you're on a widebody, there's plenty of room for people to get past you if you're just hanging out in the jump during boarding, but I'm amazed at how many JS'ers will just stand in the tiny entrance to a Guppy cockpit for the entire 40 minute boarding process.
It's like, dude, you're going to be scrunched in with us for the next few hours... Can't you go wait somewhere out of the way? It just adds more shuffling to the entire dance that happens when you need to hit the head but the two forward FAs are standing there greeting pax, and you can't open the cockpit door fully because of the forward lav door being open. Guppy drivers know exactly what I'm talking about...
I'm the farthest thing from a grumpy ol' CA you'll ever meet, but unless you're on a widebody, for the love of God please stow your bag and go wait in the jetbridge until boarding is complete...
