That’s generally frowned upon, but not illegal.

I seem to recall some SWA pilot trying that on his fini flight.

Not at all. You're getting a free ride, so you should respect the flight crew. Check in and get out of the way until all of the pax are on. It's simple. Otherwise, go live in base.

Yeah! Sit down and shut up! Who would want to be a part of a profession that has camaraderie?

you act like you pay for gas or the metal itself. You're a cog in the wheel just like everyone else.

Jumpseating, both as a JS and an operating crew is an activity of mutual respect. The jumpseater should be professional and appreciative. The operating crew and captain should be professional, accomodating and welcoming. It is understood that each person will be in a position of needing the benefit at some people and so they should treat the other as they would want to be treated if they ever needed to JS.

I do. And it's glorious. And anytime I jumpseat I treat the captain with the utmost respect and courtesy, including having my docs in hand when I show up to the cockpit. But the OP wants a jumpseater to HAND the documents to him WHILE you're asking for the ride, and you better do it at the exact time he wants, and he wants you to offer assistance in any way possible, and he wants you to query him about where to stow your bags, and then, and only then, may you grace him with your presence and be welcome on his jumpseat. Basically, he wants to be kissed between the back pockets.

yeah, that's being a jerk. You see it differently.
