Boy am I glad we got ANOTHER thread from a Captain Happy telling us all how they prefer their JS/DH to act.
Do ya’ll treat your wives this way when she doesn’t cut the crust off your PB&J the “correct” way?

Why do you do this?
The etiquette used to be always come down with the last of the passengers so as not to crowd the flight deck.
In the last few years, I have seen an influx of jumpseaters who come down the jetbridge 35 mintues before departure and crowd the flight deck awkwardly staring over us as we do our business.
I can't really ask them to stand in the jetbridge because TSA regulations don't allow them to leave once boarded. Some stations enforce this more than others.
Please stop doing this.
Oh yeah... don't make me ask for your documents. Hand them over as you ask for a ride.

HEY, I resemble that!
Not all geezers behave like OP. I have less than 10 left, commute myself, 18 years and counting. Hopefully not a blowhard....
Like pretty much every other reply in the thread:
Come down first so I am not busy, and we have space for your bag.
JS in the cockpit: have your paperwork ready, and after checking in with us, wait in the jetway (SWA: take a seat in the back, listen to PA).
Seat in the back: show ID& boarding pass, take your seat.
This is what I prefer when working, what I do when commuting, and what the gate agents do 99% of the times.
Especially the bag... Every now & then I won't know till the end if I get on because own metal pilot will take seat in the back, if possible, to give me the JS (awesome), on a full flight with SBYs. By the time I do get the JS, sometimes no more bag space, so have to check. For pax that just means waiting for the bag at the belt for a few minutes. For a commuting pilot at my base that means: taking the train to the main terminal, going landside, waiting for bag, going through KCM/random, taking the train back to the gates. I have timed it at over 30 minutes more than a few times.
If you don't want the dude breathing down your neck, politely ask him to wait in the jetway, there is definitely not a single TSA regulation preventing that, #€!!, every jetway is packed with people.... I have gone down at ETD-45, gotten the OK from the captain, left my bag on the plane, and gone up to grab a coffee, maybe not smart, but never a problem.... Maybe you should commute for a while, like half of us do, so you understand the situation....
Reply of the day, and yes, I just wrote an essay about how I prefer the JS to act. And I am Happy most of the time 🤣

As a former commuter, I am thankful not to do that again; it comes down to several things.
1. I want to get my bag stowed somewhere on the plane besides getting checked, especially on the 737. It is a PITA to have to check it.
2. Sometimes, it has happened; the gate agent forgets about me and closes the flight while I am standing there off to the side. I would always try to get a JS pass and get down there before anything wonky would happen.
3. I always check in with the captain when it's less busy, stow my bags, head to the jet bridge, and wait there. I never once had anyone tell me I couldn't do that.
4. If you are a regular WN commuter, you may just be used to getting down there early as that's how we do it.
5. Lastly, its not that big of a deal to have a commuter interrupt or stand there, its not like we are performing open heart surgery where every second counts. 99% of the time we are all just staring at our phones or shooting the **** once the brief and setup is done.
It's nothing personal. I don't want to be over your shoulder or bug you, let alone sit in the JS anymore more than you do. However, know that you can and always are welcome on mine and I will try to stay out of your way as best as possible. Commuting is stressful.

Sorry but have to agree with the OP. There will be other people that will need to come in and out of the cockpit including us for a PDP, or other jumpseaters, FAMs, FAs, gate agents, MX, etc. You're just clogging up things standing there. I can discern the amateurs from the pros on their etiquette including staying the hell out of the way.

I've never once seen a JS come in prior to boarding and just stand in the door. Once I saw someone sit on the JS behind the Captain. While I would have preferred him be in the jet bridge, he wasn't in the way and when we got up to PDP, he stepped into the galley and was out of the way.
