End of 2022 Salary Survey

In exchange for “the flying is not as cool,” you receive:
-more than double the compensation
-almost complete control over where you live and what you do with your life
-no extra duties on top of flying the jet
-more time to pursue other hobbies/spend time with family.
I’ll take that trade every day. The grass is very much greener.

The grass is not greener. You are flying a fighter jet in the Navy. Pretty darn cool. I wouldnt trade 1 day of my military service for 1 day at the airlines and I was a loser helicopter pilot for a big chunk of it. This airline flying is by far the most boring flying you will ever do.....how guys do 40 years of LGA-DFW without going crazy is beyond me. Wait, I get it, they do JFK-LHR over and over also.
I love what I do and I love that I get to do it for the country I love. I have done some cool **** and have met so many amazing people so I will never regret my decision to join. I signed up for 8 years (after winging, which took me 4 long years to get) and I will serve those to my utmost. However, spending 7-10 straight months on a a piece of steel with covid "portcalls" will wear down any salty sailor.
For me its not about the insane salary numbers people are posting but the QOL the airlines seem to have. I sat next to FedEx pilot on my flight back from Christmas leave and after talking to him, the Navy is fighting a losing battle if they want pilots to stay in after their commitment. The Fedex salary and pension are almost 3x that of the military and his QOL was off the charts.
Military aviation aviation is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to serve their country, fly badass jets, and get a decent paycheck while doing it. However, their are drawbacks to it which make it not as appealing the further into you get.
Thank you all for letting me hack this thread. Definitely gives me something to look forward to, even if it is 4 years away.

I guess I did it the other way. 6am to 10am airport reserve? Yeah ok. Usually at the Starbucks outside security by 0730, quick badge through KCM and maybe a cruise through the terminal for plausible deniability then usually headed home around 0900. Easy peasy.
And yeah, there was never a repo.

.......MESA sucks.

To even try to compare the 2 is, well, simply not possible.

AS year 5 pay FO
Flew 800hrs during 2022, very low QOL during winter and I try and work less during summer. The only way to get time off during summer is forced drops using a buddy system and vacation time if you can hold it. 55 hours of very creative sick time use.
28K DC 401K
215K not including per diem
5K per diem. I try and enjoy life on the road so this doesn't count toward much in my situation.
215K includes 22K retro pay
I did not pick up premium during contract talks but did after. Although it was generally hard to get. Our payroll system is super convoluted so it is very difficult to tell how many hours I was paid for in 2022. Currently missing at least 34 hours of pay from my January paycheck because our scheduling software does not automatically add pay for things like delay, PTD, cancelation etc. A lot of my coworkers are in this situation.
Gotta be honest I'm not very happy with the current situation.

Avg 16 off per month, 294 block, did not work 1 month for childbirth. 0 extra flying picked up but did get multiple revisions extensions during Covid spikes so pay is inflated a bit.

His numbers are certainly eye opening for many, but I also know they are skewed. The housing and food allowances are tax free so they actually would be something like 15% higher, apples to apples. The same with medical. It's a massive income multiplier that isn't quite captured in his information. So don't try and discredit people for putting perspective on military compensation numbers
Despite what some have said above, the grass is greener at the airlines. Yes, I made great memories in the military, but I wouldn't trade what I am doing now for that crap sandwich in a second. It was a means to an end. I am at my destination now. Glad I did it. Wouldn't ever go back. Do your wings plus 8 and GTFO.

I'll just provide the full details for 9 months of line flying from April-EOY since I was on unassigned status (UNA) and in training the first 3 months:
Total Comp 9 months: $246K
Flight Pay: $206K (1211 total cred, 181 from green slip pay)
401K: $33K
Per Diem: $5K
Shared Rewards + Special "Profit Sharing" - $2K
Total TAFB: 2,011 hours (I find this stat most relevant)
Total Days worked: 121 days - 13.5 monthly avg, 17 off
Layover Nights: 82
Block: 432
Average a 3-4 day green slip a month, 65 hours in sick used, some additional pay in scheduling shenanigans/reroute and unfortunately no OE buyoffs yet.

This is great. But want to see more posts from <800 annual credit, no GS pilots. The ones who get their schedule, maybe swap or drop something, fly it and go home. For all these strivers online, I meet more people in person who say, "I just fly my schedule". Where's the competition to see who can make the least? Sure, you can work smarter, but that still requires effort.
