Take the upgrade and apply to UPS, FEDEX. At that age you will have have a full pension and a long career as a wide body captain making $400k+.

I think they're only 90 of us that are younger than 35 here at Ups. You'll go pretty far here.

Plenty of people do it, especially lately. Depending on your background I’d probably recommend going to SWA updating your applications and leaving from there. A new type rating and being at a direct competitor to each legacy will likely help expedite your departure to one of the big 3.

Whatever you do, do it quickly so as to build a base of pilots beneath you.

What do you see as competitive? I’m at 1250 TPIC, just added a 747 type rating. I applied during the last window…my app went inactive, but that was before I started my new job.

Numbers have definitely been dropping, but at UPS you are typically competing against an older more experienced group. My WAG would be you are competitive if you have at least a few thousand turbine hours to go with that TPIC and 74 type. If you are a new hire at an ACMI, you will be very competitive. We really like those guys, especially Atlas.

Since we are talking UPS, I just started at DAL and moved to ATL. Naturally UPS waited on that to happen before showing interest. Would you guys consider switching to UPS a wise move over Delta. I like Delta and would be perfectly happy but I would like WB CA pay before 30 years from now. Any thoughts?

If you want widebody captain pay, UPS is the easy answer. Only 5% of Delta captains hold their highest rate ($354/hr). All UPS captains hold our highest rate ($362/hr, TA would bump that to $401/hr by Sep 2025). However, you’ve already moved to Atlanta. There is an emotional and financial opportunity cost to moving again so soon. The financial you will easily make back. The rest is a decision for you and your wife to make. I’m sure you are familiar with differences in the flying. As I put it to a good friend, you will make more at Delta year one. After that, you will make more at UPS for the rest of your life.

I've never flown people anywhere (so I can''t speak to those challenges) and I'm 28 years into my time at brown. It's hard to argue that the financial upside is prolly here, (500k+ the past couple of years, pre-covid I'd been averaging mid-400s) but brown comes with some downsides, too. It's not an easy call either way. How are you working nights? I avoid the nights, but that means more duty days to make that happen. Full disclosure, I work in training a lot, which helps avoid the nights. Not a small point, but I don't think our choice of layover cities is nearly as interesting as a legacy carrier's. On another thread, one of our captains relates that his son is at Delta and a comparison of schedules makes staying at Delta an easy choice. Having said that, we've hired several peeps from all the legacy carriers the past few years, and I'm sure several have left here or not shown up at their class date, too. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
