I'm trying to get an expectation on what reserve life is like here...
Are you typically used in your own base or will the company DH you around to cover flying in other bases? I'm curious how that works since it is a day trip operation.
The answer is hard to say but they can put you in another base to cover reserve if you’re in an over staffed base like MCO, but usually guys that are commuters volunteer for that. Seems like most open time flying is covered by off day pilots that are in that base.
Are reserves flying much?
Not really overall perfect for the person that lives in base and has a family or want to be home and touch an airplane 3 times a month. If you’re a green captain or in High mins they will use you first.
Can you pick up open time?
Yes
Can you pick up trips out of other bases?
Yes on off days
Anything else to be aware of?
This airline is very good for the live in base time that enjoys quality of life, over the commuter. The lines are built as good as they can I guess but, you’ll be much happier living in base.

If they put you in another base for a reserve period do they cover travel and hotels for that?

Yea it’s considered TDY and everything is covered plus per diem, but we seem to be staffed in every base so I haven’t seen them have a need for that in a while, FO positions are slim but still have a couple of reserve lines

It’s managed by former regional airline management. The Chief Pilot is not the most professional and a little too political for me. Think of Avelo as a stepping stone to better and brighter places. Other than that, my paycheck shows up on time, crew is nice, and training is easy. Almost too easy because everyone passes.

About 95% of the people leaving are relatively young and going to the majors United American and delta. That’s their dream and they got the offer and Avelo was the key to getting the call. But some are leaving because they didn’t get their choice of base right out of training. But it’s a seniority system and no one wants to wait for anything anymore
