I think the old CP got burnt out and wanted to fly the line. The new CP is former military and runs it like he is still in the military. The main concern is moral. It started as a great job that decayed fast. Training is easy, no one fails, and the hardest thing is the different teaching methods of each instructor. There are only 5 bases and 80% of guys commute. If you live in base, it’s a great job. If you have family that has roots in other places, it will be tough. The company is not shy about stating that growth will be on the east coast. They said a west coast base by next year but I don’t think they have the resources to expand. Plus, California is a tough market for business.
The pay is below standard and it will be below average as other airlines get their new contracts. If you are in your 20’s, that’s about a 2 million dollar difference. If you are in your 50s, not so much. That’s why the company attracts more senior guys with vast differences. There were rumors of an extra pay increase before the rise in fuel prices. The guys that come here are not the cream of the crop and it will show. Almost every FO I have flown with have their apps at United, Delta, American, and Southwest. Almost everyone would have wished to get a seniority number at those companies before coming to Avelo.
Like a previous poster said, it’s good if you live in base and have family. There are growing pains like every new airline but there has never been such demand at the Big 3 so why waste your time and lose out on seniority. It could be the difference between being furloughed, Captain upgrade, base choice, and reserve.

Many guys are messaging me asking about Avelo. Don’t have the time to answer everyone, so here is my take…
The Ugly: The CP is lowering moral and making changes that are causing people to quit. Guys were given bases in training and then told that it is no longer available. I know many guys that have left or are leaving. It’s a different company from when I started and it is slowly getting worse. Also, many pilots here have some sort of incident, failure, or conviction so some guys are stuck.

He speaks the truth.
Promises made, only to change drastically a week later such as pay protection ( IE they will not pay you properly), scheduling ,basing, denying basic expense claims.
They are starting to behave like a company that is running out of money. I saw the dramatic changes from what I was sold & saw for first few months, then CP change ( promises broken, basically lied to) to what finally got me to leave.
It is not the place of " Do the Right Thing". It was, but is no longer.

Some of the senior guys have written to the CEO with concerns. They bypassed the D.O. because his lack of any oversight or professionalism is concerning to some of us. It’s mostly the CP H.H. who treats the pilot group with disrespect. Less and less people are going to virtual pilot meetings and it’s obvious why. He simply has too much power without oversight. He does the pilot hirings, the terminations, the expense reports, and base selections. Where other airlines are big enough to spread the work, he is in charge of things that affect 100% of the pilot group. It’s his way or else.
We loved the old CP, he was one of us. Flying the line and having our backs on concerns. Some guys didn’t get along with him but I found him to be straight forward and honest. The opposite of what we have now.
To answer your question, most guys would never imagine unionizing at the beginning but I think it might be a need for one.

Commuting to HVN?
Hi folks,
Was on an info call recently and was told most new hire pilots will be in HVN for a while right after training - perhaps on reserve. Can someone help me understand how this works? Airport seems kind of "out there." If you are commuting, do you fly into LGA and then catch a train? Is there a better airport to fly in to? Can you list yourself on any airline or just certain ones? Can you get positive space? What is Avelo policy on commuting? Must give yourself 2 flights to make it or something like that? Do you end up jumpseating? Can you do that (CASS)? Thanks in advance!

From LGA take the M60 bus to metro north station Harlem at 125th street. About 30 min rude. Then get on train to new haven. The train is actually pleasant. Probably 2 hrs total to get there and less than $20.
