Took an early retirement. Southwest has also gone in the mud in the same spot

STS is a crappy airport for 121. But why would anyone take an early retirement, and then go to Avelo?
I mean, we all have our reasons, but that just makes no sense.

I wondered that at first, but then thought it could of been a COVID retirement package. Not sure specifically about Southwest. But I do know at other majors it was some pretty sweet deal to retire early.

But they could have just stayed where they were, get paid more, with better work rules. Just does not compute.

No, the retirement packages were pretty lucrative. 50 hrs/mo until 65 at United.
Delta 58 hrs/mo for 3 yrs or until 65.
Don't know about American.

Might want to don your green eyeshade and run those numbers through your abacus.

It's not too complicated. They probably got sick of working the line where they were. Saw that they could do day trips and come home every night and be at the top of the seniority list of potentially something big. Now pay is like 210 an hour too.

Years ago, I met a Rosenbaum DC-8 captain who took early retirement from TWA. He was a 747 captain, and he said "they all laughed at me when I took the deal, none of them are laughing now!" More recently, we had a guy at Spirit who took early retirement at Delta. He upgraded, and has since hit 65 and retired again.

Fall of 2020, Covid scare at a peak and no vaccine in sight... Furlough talk, so a younger pilot with kids doesn't get furloughed...reasons may look poor in retrospect...but once you give up your seat, like musical chairs, you can't go back. ..so DEC at Avelo looks great and beats a lot of the options.
