Anyone going to Avelo/Breeze or any other start-up that listens to any promises made by chief pilots/HR etc…Well I would question your overall judgement including operating an airplane. Both of those airlines are still in raw survival mode. They will be for years. The changes they make are less out of sleaze and more out of desperation. They could, on a very very long shot become an airline to make a career out of but odds are strongly against that.

You are heading towards unionization anyway like all other airline pilots why wait until you are all stressed out and upset? Just move it forward.

Odds are actually not very against us at all, plenty of business to be had in the airlines from sun markets. You’re an outsider looking in.

Left Avelo earlier this year for a major. I would stay away especially with all the airlines hiring. From what my class mates told me, things have changed for the worse.

Get to a reputable place and build seniority.

Avelo used to be a great place. The old Chief TT was respected but it’s a different company now. Not for the better either. It went down hill fast.

Most of management is from ASA and it is managed like a regional. Most of the guys I flew with have their application out. It had so much potential but bad decisions ruined it for the worse.

Avelo is still getting a continuous flow of applicants but once people had enough, people will start to leave. Maybe not the senior guys in BUR but the guys that have to commute to the NorthEast.

No thank you.

Got the no thanks email huh

By the way, what does going to a startup have anything to do with ability to operate a plane?

Hi, I’ve been absent from this for many years and considering getting back into the airline game. I’ve got 23 years as a professional pilot but have flown corporate for the last 10. Needless to say I’m no longer a young hotshot with a wife and girlfriend on separate coasts. My kids are raised, my (only) wife is still with me and my cars are paid for. It’s obvious that this world has changed drastically since I left as there were no startups, DEC’S or committing stipends in my heyday. The DEC thing has peaked my interest both at Breeze and Avelo but I’m curious if I’d be the only gray haired captain on the property? Are most of you guys early/mid career? Just out of the regionals? Sounds like the daily grind is manageable at both but I’m curious what you all think?

is there actually a commuter stipend?

Is the 15~18 days off realistic?

How does holiday flying work?

Am I crazy to think that the DEC option is the best case for a guy to finish his career?

any positive advice is welcome.

Nothing. But believing the same broken record from Start-Up management about how cool, how big, how fast etc…And making career decisions using that mantra…That is judgement…

Stipend is $1800 per month.

18 days off per month was realistic in the beginning but no longer the case. Remember that the days off are not always paired together so you will struggle with commuting.

DEC is a good option but you can upgrade at the majors within a few years.

Remember that Avelo opens and closes routes quickly so you have to be flexible. Many guys got Burbank while in training and then notified later that they will go to New Haven instead. Had a few upset new hires on my jumpseat.

During a recent pilot meeting, the chief tried to control people posting on social media and the consequences of rumors. It didn’t go well with the pilot group.

My advice, go to a regional and then a major. Your family will thank me for it.

DEC means you will be on reserve forever as Senior FO's upgrade. Probably a good deal initially, but not at this point unless you don't mind commuting to 12 days off and no control of SC assignments, so expect all commuting on days off.

Used to be 15 days off on reserve unit November.

So much for this.
