Default VIRGINS PAY AND MONTHLT GUAR. announced

"Virgin American Announces Pay
Pay starts at $2,500 a month during training and increase to 3080 a month when training is completed. Upon airline launch, rate of pay will be $44 and hour with a 70 hour guarantee. Captain 1st year (upgrade goes back to 1 year Captain regardless of years with company) is $95 an hour and upgrade is merit based. Each year pay increases $5000 year for Captain and first officers. Current max rate $120 per hour for 6 year Captain. The airline plans a mid-summer launch operating A319s and A320s from its San Francisco base to New York's JFK airport."

Merit based upgrades. Wow...there's a ticket to FAR violations and doing "whatever it takes..." to help the company.

If the pay is based on an hourly figure how is the annual raise determined at $5,000? I had heard it was $5 an hour.

Let's say you have a maintenance item you don't feel comfortable with, the company says "if you don't want to fly it, I guess you aren't ready to be a Capt." You either fly it and upgrade, or sit in the right seat for your career, so you choose to fly it, thinking "what could go wrong?" Something goes wrong or the company self discloses, guess who gets stuck holding the ball.

Scenario #2

You've just spent the last 2 days doing redeyes. As luck would have it, on your layover at the Cockroach Inn, the hotel just happens to be remodeling and there is jackhammering on the floor above you. So after about 30 minutes of sleep you are so tired you can't tie your shoes, but you are soooo close to upgrade because you've been doing your part. Now it comes time to take off, and you forget to set the flaps for takeoff.

Scenario #3

There is a pig named Charles. He is having trouble jumping a fence. He meets a fairy named Priscilla. He can't decide whether to wish to become an animal that can jump the fence, or to magically get some wings. As luck would have it, after choosing wings, he is slaughtered.

Maybe if he had gotten another 3 hours of sleep the night before (instead he was kept up by the goats in the pasture next door banging all night), he wouldn't have made such a dreadful mistake.

Default ^^^^Thats why merit based upgrades don't work

I hope its clear to all as to why it just doesn't work to wish for the wings. Not to mention all the years Charles spent kissin ass on those animals who could jump the fence.

Yup, that pretty much sums it up. I always itched against the whole "who was here longest" part of seniority, but that is exactly why you need it.

Carnival Airlines used to do this... I had a couple of friends that upgraded while still on probation. You had to "interview" for the upgrade and also take a sim ride though 99% were typed in the airplane already. It didnt make for a friendly working environment when the guy in the left seat has been there for 10 months (no previous jet experience at all) and the person in the right seat has been there for a few years.
