The company spends the time and money getting them ready for their check ride, but they can't pass it after 2 attempts. So after all that wasted effort, our hero is now a right seater, again.

Now the training starts for the next person one number lower.

No matter what light you shine on it, both systems of upgrade have their pitfalls and benefits.
Unless that airline has an "up or out" policy.

Interesting point. Do many of the airlines have that policy?

I believe TWA, in the 50's when my Grandpa was starting, had an up or out policy. I also believe that they would upgrade FO's after 5 years with the airline. This did not mean you flew as a Captain, but rather that you qualified as a Captain. Apparently they wanted to see if the FO could upgrade, and if not they cut bait. Does anyone know if this is true or am I simply hallucinating?

There is no merit based captain upgrade at VA. It is seniority based and only seniority. Yes there is a small group of F/O's who have to get 1000 hours in type, then they can upgrade by seniorty. How do I know this? I work there. I sure wish all the VA haters would stop posting false information just to stir the pot.

Pedro,

Are you still hiring for Capt positions? If so, are the requirements the same as posted on the site for all recruits? Is there a training bond? Have you been doing any flying while waiting for the launch, or do you all simply wait at home while getting paid? How many pilots hired so far, and how many more are you looking for this year?
