I am vested already at 2.5% per year with 8 years. I am 34 now.
So if I left today I could collect 20% of about 100k at age 60
If I hold out for another 7 years and buy 5 years of credit to make it 20 years of credit. and then leave with 50% of 100k and collect at age 50. Financial planner says do this....all while working both jobs for 7 years. I think I will be divorced and my kids will not know their dad. Unless I can drop almost all of my trips at a regional this probably won't happen.
Realistically think I will get to a regional mid next year and hold on to both jobs utilizing the vacation time I have saved up to get me to the upgrade. Once upgraded at the regional it won't be much of a paycut and I will drop the fire department and get to a LAS based LCC as quickly as possible and apply for legacy's as well.

It's a tough decision for sure. I know when I'm not flying the last thing I want to do is work another job. Flying is tiring and going back to work tired sucks.
I say get on the part 135 and see if you like it. If you do go all in and advance as quickly as you can. In this gig seniority mean almost everything. Run a budget and see if you can manage on the first couple yrs at a regional.
A pension is nice but in 7 yrs in the airlines and advancing as quickly as you can you'll make up for the loss of pension.
Also make sure the wife is on board 100%. If shes not a divorce will suck all the money and life out of you and you're new career.
