I’m glad to hear that some people are getting their tax money back...eventually. As for non-pension residents, thats a different story.

I’m glad you pointed out that it is their money. And speaking of taxes, they are about to go up.
On the topic of California cities, I drove through Coronado two days ago. Beautiful area. Gasoline is $5/gallon.
San Francisco has very much deteriorated, is less safe, and is overrunning with homeless people and hostile panhandlers.

California income taxes
It’s around 4 in most non tourist trap areas. To me the ca gas tax is the worst tax the state has. The newest increase was set to be repealed but the way the bill was written just confused the average voter and was voted down. It said something like, paraphrasing, repeal money for roads and bridges.
That seems clear to me. I vote against all tax increases and bonds. But they always seem to pass lately, even though the constitution requires 2/3 vote for tax increases.

San Fran gas price way up there as well. Gas tax in CA is about 50 cents a gallon. But at least COVID has caused a tax surplus for the state, not to mention the billions coming from the latest COVID pork bill. Maybe they can use that money to offset all taxes for a period of time?

It’s more than that.

- The federal government charges an excise tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.
- California’s excise taxes on gasoline come to 50.5 cents per gallon. That includes 12.7 cents per gallon from the controversial Senate Bill 1that became law to improve infrastructure and develop transportation programs across the state.
- Plus, there’s a state sales tax. It can vary by area but the Stillwater analysis estimated the sales tax averages 10.7 cents per gallon.

I’m not buying a subscription but thanks. Don’t worry I’m sure California will still be a net contributor to the federal budget. Also, there was a budget surplus before covid. I’m not sure what a tax surplus even is? I mean to believe covid caused a surplus with everything closed is kind of nutty. I’m out because I can tell the trolls are emerging.
I’ve never bought a subscription to that rag. Tax surplus was supposed to be synonymous to budget surplus but with a negative connotation. Doesn’t matter whether it’s before or after COVID, if they are taxing to the point where even California can’t spend it, they are taxing way too much. Especially if on top of that they are also a net contribute to the federal government. They’re even worse! Lower taxes might save some business and citizens leaving otherwise. But I highly doubt that will happen anytime in the near future.
