California will eventually come after you because they look at income earned in their State as taxable income. Believe it or not, California and other States have a "Jock tax" where professional athletes are liable for income tax on games played in respective States.

I would get a consult from a California CPA! They came after me and I lived in a State that had an income tax because their argument was that I earned that income in California. Luckily for me, I was in a "paper domicile" and my trips never touched California and showed them flight logs that demonstrated that. My personal opinion, is that the airspace and concrete you work in/on is Federal domain and therefore not subject to any state tax. States do not own the airspace above it, however that would be a legal challenge. They may be able to argue the time spent taxiing is subject to CA. income tax because that is "California domain" especially at regional airports.

Transportation employees are covered by a specific law with regard to state taxes. State taxes are income not residence taxes. Most people pay the taxes where the money is earned. There is no special jock tax. They pay where they earn the money like everyone else.
Transportation workers on the other hand pay state taxes where the income is earned if that amount exceeds 50% of their total work. If a transportation worker does not earn more than 50% of his income in a specific state he may pay all state income taxes based on his residence. Hence why so many pilots live in tax free states.
If however you choose to commute to a sim instructor job such as a Delta guy living in Florida commuting to work as a sim instructor in ATL you would be responsible for paying Georgia income taxes even though you lived in FL since more than 50% of your work is in GA.

Just ask a few northwest pilots how having “two residences” worked out for them?

I would avoid buying property in CA if you don't really need to own it.

I once got billed in Ohio. Cleveland city tax too. and I lived in Louisiana. I had no residence at all. I slept in the airport terminal before and after my trips, or crashed at friends homes. I had to fight for that money to get it back.

Anyway, register to vote in Florida for example, own property there too, get a library card, go check out some books. make sure your foot print is small in CA.

Renting space in a crash pad may be smarter to avoid the insane taxes in CA.

I think your taxes should go to benefit the area where you really reside. So the laws of the state of your residence is really what you're trying to honor. it's a shame CA has to be so aggressive that folks need to go out and get proactive defenses from over-zealous CA tax collectors.

CA isn't the only state that is broke. LA, sent be a motor vehicle bill plus back payments for a truck I haven't owned since 1996. The vehicle was totaled over 20 years ago and LA tracked me down in Texas to send me a bill. Nuts! Couldn't they simply figure out I wasn't a resident there any longer?

Bottom line: minimize your footprint in high tax jurisdictions and establish residency the right and legal way in the state of your choosing. CA can suck it.

We don't live there, but California doesn't control its own currency, and can only sell bonds to cover its budget. Your taxes there aren't high enough to cover your spending so you should pay more every month.
You won't, and when the interest becomes too high it will file BK and beg the US government to buy all the debt.

Then your flawed spending will continue because your parent paid off your credit card to "help" you.

Your state is already spending people's money who don't live there, the accounting just hasn't been finished yet. A Cali bk could just be the next recession trigger.

You know Cali gives more money to the federal government than it receives right?

The state or the people? You think taxes should be purchasing an annuity for yourself. Cali pays more for national defense than Iowa, you got more state to defend. I pay more taxes than I receive. How are you justifying the rest of the country bail out your states spending.

1. I don’t live there.
2. Per capita, not dollar amount. Of course California pays more total than Iowa, but it also pays more relative to the amount of money it receives from the federal government.
3. Overall the biggest recipients of money from the federal government are red states. Easy to balance the budget when the feds are subsiding your population.

Yea but are you only calculating receiving federal dollars in programs like Medicaid.

You are not calculating what amount of federal defense spending flows into Cali and juices the economy.

You can't just say all Federal defense spending is equal among the states, and we have less per capita on Medicaid so we're "carrying" the country.
