At SWA we do have some opportunities to change up our schedules, but they are limited. We can’t “drop” trips, but we can give them away and also pick up giveaway trips from other pilots, including reserve blocks. We can trade with the company for similar length trips (thus “move” the schedule), and also trade with other pilots.
Giving away trips here can be difficult.

Also, you can drop 4 days a month but that requires a lot of monitoring the trading software and a bit of luck.

15 years at United/Continental and I’ve flown my awarded schedule once; and that was by choice.
You can definitely improve your schedule but you have to spend time on CCS. Set up Criteria trades, drops, etc and it just about takes care of itself. Good luck.

I’ve dropped my entire schedule at AA ((lineholder) since December. Haven’t flown a trip for straight pay since then- all premium, working the same amount of days. There are a few methods of doing this. It isn’t that difficult to do nor does it take a ton of time. There are ways to automate the process so you’re not glued to a phone. Obviously, seniority helps- getting trips others desire in PBS is the first step. Don’t expect to be the most junior lineholder and have the same flexibility as the most senior lineholder. I imagine that principle applies at any airline.

There is no lineholder guarantee at AA, only a line construction window (usually within 73-87 hours) when PBS issues your schedule and determines if you have a regular line or a "Hybrid" line (issued a low-credit line below the window with "Hybrid" reserve-ish days to make up the difference, which can all be dropped). Premium pays premium, and is only offset by the number of sick hours you use that month. The sick offset is supposedly already agreed to be done-away with in the current Section 6 negotiations.
