That’s nice. I had a similar corporate gig flying a Challenger, BUT I was on call 24/7/365 with 1.5hr call out. It could have been the best job in the world except for that detail. 72 hr notice is doable.

United is next up to bat again with an amendable contract at the end of this year. Both ALPA and management claim to be on track for an early agreement.

I've noticed or at least it seems to me that the way you speak of Alpa is in the form of they. Not that you specifically said it but that's the way you seem to refer to it. Remember WE are Alpa. If you want to call it some new fancy name and hire some new guys in to run it mark my words a few years down the road it'll smell exactly the same as what we have now, possibly worse but I doubt better.
Then we will have tens of thousands of less members behind us.
For ME 1.95 % is a steal for what I feel I get for it. I would never have the ability or expect much more than what I get out of these guys for 1.95.
Do I think Alpa is perfect? No but it's pretty darn good. No other airline in the United States of America gets better performance out of thier in house union then Alpa has done for me after 20 years.

I've been to many ALPA events, some that involve open bars, and feel my money is being well spent. Spending money to keep events fluid, conversation going, and keep people fed is an appropriate allocation of funds, in my view. Especially for the volunteers who work tirelessly on our behalf. Anyone can volunteer and participate. Raise your hand and you're in - I guarantee it.
The biggest threat I see is a potential dues reduction and how that will effect the OCF. We need as much money in that as possible for the inevitable downturn that will happen. The OCF kept ALPA alive post-9/11.

Yes, ALPA is a member-driven organization. If people thought they were being charged too much in dues, or wanted to limit the amount of dinner and open bars a previous poster mentioned, we could pass resolutions at our LEC meetings and have them progress to the Executive Council or BOD if needed.

A previous poster suggests that some waste should be expected and accepted. I'd like someone to put a number to what amount of waste we should accept. My number is "zero".
Maybe some transparency wrt ALPA finances would be in order. There's a glossy self-promotion magazine that ALPA sends to me that gets promptly sent to the recycle bin. How about ALPA publishes a quarterly financial report in that overpriced waste of paper on a quarterly basis including salaries and benefits of all of the ALPA employees? I would definitely read that and it would be a good use of member resources.

Fair enough. Here are some points you and the other ALPA attack dogs might want to consider.
- The fact that Phuz is a 3 year CA allowing that salary has as much to do with DL's fleet choices and schedules on those fleets. UAL is an ALPA shop - do you have 3 year CA's making that salary?
- 1.95% is too much. ALPA is not immune to the tendency of large organizations with an income stream to become bloated and waste money. Problem is, that's my money they are wasting. If ALPA had a surplus before the last round of contracts, they're surely running even more of a surplus now with the new pay rates and profit sharing programs... that is unless they are wasting more of my money.
- The "gift horse" that you refer to might be more accurately called "paid representation" - a gift is something given for free, and we know that ain't ALPA. That paid representation at DALPA tried their best to shove a crappy TA down our throats before membership had to take action and correct the ship. Those guys were being advised by ALPA lawyers and financial experts BTW - paid for by my dues $. So forgive me for disagreeing with your "gift horse" analogy. Phuz mentioned he's been a dues paying member for 10 years prior at a regional. I'd say he paid his dues for said "gift horse" applenty.
There's a problem when a large organization tries to suppress dissent. So maybe you and the other snarky posters should back up a few paces and try to consider what Phuz is saying.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see an airline pilot think for himself. Great post!

Another off-camber data point:
10/11 year U.S. based Cathay Pacific 777 F/O
W-2:
Gross pay: $193K
Retirement: $30K
Per Diem: cash allowances (kickin' it old school)
Health Insurance: zero cost, and probably the best benefit of the job
Five years ago, these numbers were pretty good.
Block Hours: Roughly 850 (you think you're working hard?) of which I slept or watched movies during 350 (maybe not that hard).
Totals days: Around 110. This is the only thing that has kept me here so long. Ummm... that, and driving to work.
Life as we know it has changed here. All opportunities outside of Hong Kong have been shut down and the company just kicked the can down the road another year. Currently seeking opportunity at SWA, UA, and FedEx, in no particular order.
