What unions do you have a choice on whether or not to be a member? The IPA at UPS is mandatory and the dues come out no matter what. I thought it was federal law, but maybe it's state. But how could state law apply to our bubbas based at MIA, ONT, and ANC?

I don't know a whole lot about ALPA. But I do know that most of our old heads at UPS hate ALPA and what they have done to this profession and industry. Incidently I do see a lot of Jetblue guys during the sort waiting on jumpseats. Is it because you ALPA guys in Memphis don;t give them rides?

Read Flying the Line I and II. Who do you think ALPA is? It's every single line pilot at every ALPA represented carrier, myself included. I can assure you we are not responsible for the current state of the industry.

Just my 2 cents on JB vs. VA and the jumpseat. I think options were pretty thin when a lot of guys were hired at JB. Do I think they will unionize: absolutely.

However, today there are more opportunities for employment and for someone to choose VA over some more established carriers is disgusting. Those pay rates aren't helping anyone. What's more disturbing are some of the personalities on the VA threads. Just reading your posts is reason enough to deny a JS.

Seriously, guy, what's your deal against FDX?? I told you I didn't have a problem with people getting jumpseats if they didn't have the choice to be in a union at the airline. I also told you that I'm not senior enough to worry about allowing J/S or not, so I have no idea if anyone in MEM is denying JB guys rides or not. I SERIOUSLY doubt it, though. 97% of the guys at FDX are great dudes (the other 3% probably don't belong to the union, either). But, looks like you've got to keep on poking anyway. Until our most recent contract, there was no closed shop. Guys could choose to belong or not. Some, about 3%, chose not to. From now on, everyone has to pay dues, member or not. For those who don't belong to FDXALPA, no, I wouldn't look favorably on giving them a jumpseat. Or any other professional courtesy outside the aircraft, either. I imagine people at IPA don't look favorably at non union members either. If they don't, they should. Sure, it's not ALPA, but I'd bet many of your old heads are as pro union as anyone. As far as ALPA ruining our industry, there's more than enough threads to go around about that. It's not about ALPA, it's about pilot unions in general. Maybe you're the one who's a little too comfortable at UPS. You beat the brown and IPA drum over and over, which is just fine, I'm glad you like your job and your union. It's possible your job won't last forever, though. I wouldn't be so quick to bash other carriers or other unions, you may belong to one of them someday.

If you are in a position to help someone then the right thing to do is help. If there are not enough seats then adjust accordingly. There are things that need to be fixed but letting a seat go empty is not the way to make a point.
I had an off-line pilot check in with me for the jumpseat and when everyone was on board he went to get an open seat. He told a aisle seat passenger that he needed to sit in the aisle since “ he may be needed to fly the airplane at anytime”. When the flight attendant told me this I had him come and sit in the jumpseat for the rest of the 5 hour flight “ in case he needs to fly the airplane” .
Your all welcome just be nice to my crew and passengers.

Just when you thought you had heard it all. WOW, was it a regional guy? Lately we have had some with absolutely no " etiquette".

They need to put together a POD-CAST that teaches them jumpseat/non-ren etiquette.............

I was in junior high when the original UPS pilots chose to go it alone after leaving the teamsters. They made a conscious decision not to let ALPA get a foothold. I listen a lot and find it educational. Many of our "old heads" have an extreme dislike for ALPA. One thing that ALPA screwed up recently that I do know about second hand is the latest FDX contracts. Someone on our EB told me directly that UPS had agreed to 2007 payrates for captains in the 265 range. Subsequently ALPA asked for significantly less than what UPS had already agreed to. The NMB which oversaw both negotiations burned us when UPS wanted us to agree to FDX scope language in exchange for the pay rates. When we would not give up scope UPS pulled the 265 pay rates. Our EB seemed to think that it was ALPAs screw up.

I have nothing against FDX. I concede that it is probably the best flying job out there due to pay rates and the way you guys get treated. Jumpseats have been a hot button issue at UPS, but I have never heard of a UPS captain crapping on fellow pilots by denying the jumpseat based upon where he works. I'm just honestly asking if the FDX guys don't give rides to Jetblue.

To say that the pre 9/11 rates of 265/hour were agreed upon would be untrue. Although this was the range we were talking about, nothing had been agreed to, and the company had NOT given us a counter proposal. We were expecting their counter proposal that second week in September 2001.....
