Am I the only one finding the correlation to OPs post and the most recent installment of Living the Dream on YouTube being pretty recent. Sheesh

As an aside, I've been flying RJs for nearly 20 years and have *never, ever* had a first officer or captain transmit on 121.5 for any purpose other than getting a radio freq.
Every trip my FO and I look at each other after turning down the volume, wondering who is playing games.
To blame regional pilots is asinine. I will say that not all regionals are created equal, however.

And how long ago was that? Accounting for inflation? Almost all regional fo's make under 60/hr which is mcdonalds wages. You pay mcdonalds wages, you get mcdonalds quality. Most pilots act as professionally as the company treats them. The sim instructors/check airman, they make 150k+ a year at regionals and they act professional. The company tells the fo's, you're only worth30-40k/yr so that's all the effort I'm going to put in. Same with frontier and other poorly paid ulcc lcc's for example. Most guys take pay cuts to go from flying a 50 seat rj to flying a 220 seat Airbus 321. What do you think that says to the pilot about how the company sees them. If you pay them and treat them like the professional they are, they will act like it. If you pay them like a professional, you can FORCE them to act like a professional. If you don't pay them and treat them like a professional, you can only HOPE they act like a professional because you need them more than they need you (which is where we are in the industry today).
It wasn't all that long ago actually. I calculated my pay one time by taking my monthly pay and dividing it by my TAFB and came up with $3 and change an hour. Way below mcdonald's wages. the regional pilot salaries have gone up quite a bit in recent years. Look, I get your angle and I agree with you-we all want more pay and to be treated like professionals. But you can't sit here and condone unprofessional behavior because of low pay. That's like saying "well, gee I'm sorry that guy killed someone, but he was poor, so it's cool".

I have in fact been on a jump seat when a captain said "lets go fishin on guard for Natzis"...... it was on an Airbus 330, with the call sign that is the same as a desert plant with spines. You can blaim the RJ drivers and their low pay all you want, but no carrier is immune to having guys that don't take life as serious as the rest of you. Professional - unprofessional..... childish ..... whatever, I have bigger crap to be cranked about, the hooters girl just spilled beer on my pants

So you're saying you need to make a certain amount of money to act like a professional?
That's fantastic. I hope you do a better job teaching your kids about integrity.

This is one thing that I don't miss flying overseas. It is amazing how well your RT will become when you are working in an environment that others do not speak English as a first language. We monitor guard from the time we start our pushback until we block in. That is just how it is. If there is an ELT going off, of course we turn it down. (Not off). Once the ELT fades, we turn it back to a low level. Just so we can hear if someone is calling us.
Pet peeves are something different. I am always amazed at how bad the mainline US carriers RT are when they are outside of the US. It is like it is their first day on the radio over here. Do you guys even prepare for the arrival or approach prior to switching to approach control? It would seem not with all of the "say agains" that I hear. I mean really, get the ATIS, look at the approach plates, and you can figure out what arrival you are going to get at 99% of the airports you operate at.

Not that I've ever done that to anybody, because that would be cruel ...

I guess that's the same rationale used by regional pilots who dress like slobs, wear ear buds, sunglasses on the back of their necks, no ties, black tennis shoes, etc.
"Pay me like a pro and I'll act like a pro."
Guess what, Skippy...the day you cashed your first airline paycheck, YOU WERE A PROFESSIONAL AIRLINE PILOT.
Act like it.

Yes he is. Like many in this industry. I fly with so many people who've never had a job aside from instructing and then regional F.O. They have absolutely no clue how good they have it and how easily it came to them. Enjoy flying with him when he flows on up.
