Saw A news clip last night here in my city where they are continuing to unveil the new 17 mile long (yes you heard it correct) innovation way project which is an extension of the local University's Medical school. It is an enormous building dedicated to cardio care. There were fireworks, a parade, and a ribbon cutting ceremony. It's like someone upstairs is telling me to get into the medical field.

Will do. I does suck a little because I have to wait before I can apply. I found out that my A&P classes are too old so I have to take them again. I was trying to get into a PA program before the pilot bug bit me and now wishing I had some repellent back then.

Thanks

Interesting. The community college in my town, that I attend, just recently got a nursing program. I've never been very sure of whether or not the medical field is something I would enjoy, or would be for me. I keep going back and forth between various medical fields I might be interested in majoring in, and potentially pursuing. I thought it interesting, and maybe a sign that my school just got a program.

FYI, make sure they are in the process of being accredited. Nursing is a very large field and some specialties get away from the stereotype of being a nurse.

I have been researching the career for weeks so if you have any questions, let me know if I can help.

It is a brand new program, so it is not "accredited", yet. They said that they cannot be accredited until the first class graduates, and takes the NCLEX exam. They have, "applied for candidacy status from the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC)".

I would still have pre-requisites to meet, etc., before I can apply, so by the time that were to happen, and I were to start, hopefully, it would be accredited. By the way, at my school, it is a two year program (associate of science in nursing). I would plan to finish the bachelor's degree, eventually.

I do have one question for you. A friend of mine applied to nursing school, a couple of years ago. He only applied once, and didn't get in. I think he gave up, although I keep telling him to keep trying. The reason he was told he didn't get in, was because he didn't have any "clinical experience". How exactly does one get clinical experience, and have you done much research into how much that can effect one's chances of acceptance?

Hey Youneek, it sucks that you have to retake A&P all over again, but hopefully you still remember most of the concepts! Some of them really get stuck in your head!

I too am in the verge of being accepted into a nursing program here in Texas. Acceptance letters go out in March and April 09 so I have a little while to play the waiting game. I started to take all the required prerequisites this summer and have them all finished except for only chemistry which I’ll be taking spring of 09. I already have a bachelors of science in Political Science, so I’m applying to a Fast Track program. I recommend this type of program to anyone who already has a bachelor in some other field because with the fast track program, you finish nursing school in only a year earning a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing). Not a bad deal at all. Of course you’ll have to complete the required prerequisites first to actually get into a nursing program.

Chris, I’m not too sure what your friend was talking about when they told you that they got rejected because of “clinical experience.” I’ve never heard of that before. My only guess of what that means is that they did not volunteer enough, but from what I know, no nursing schools (none that I know of) require any kind of clinical experience before accepting you into their program. Of course the best way to find out is to call the school that you are interested in and ask them about it.

I am going to do a little more research into it, and will talk to my school. I think I am going to finish my associate of science degree, in general science, first. I wouldn't have much to finish that. I will then meet basically all of the prereqs for the program. I will then apply. My hope is that having my pilots license, etc., will actually help, if nothing more, it shows that I can work toward, and achieve something, and I'll do some volunteer work, to add the the application.

I've been browsing various nursing jobs local to me. Most of them are paying $70-$80K, with quite good benefits. It really seems like a great career option.

How many men are nurses nowadays? I haven't been to a hospital lately. (thank god). This might be an option for me. Do they have size 38 scrubs?
