One of my recent captains on the -400 had about 3000TT. So far he has been one of the better captains I have flown with. Solid, patient, and takes the time to mentor. Age and high time bring baggage.

They also tend to know that deep down and are therefore a little sensitive, check the mirror.

All the best.
thread getting off track somewhat but let me "throw out there" that 28 year olds with less than 1000 hrs are being made "captain" of F-16's with lethal bombs and missiles and being cut loose.

with that said, Captain is more about leadership than Embry Riddle knowledge of the plane's every detail, altho technical knowledge is important. it is more about big-picture, decision making, delegation, and ensuring the "team" of airplane crew, ground/company staff, etc folks all get the mission done.

at least that is how I see it.

later

Your recent captain had 3000TT? I take it min flight time was not always 5000 if this is the case. Just curious how he managed to get where he is with low time.

He got hired 4 years ago when Kalitta was hiring low time due to a temporary pilot shortage. Then got furloughed for 2years, recalled and made captain. In other words got in at the right time.

Amazing how he likely was thinking he got in at the wrong time with the furlough. My oh my what a difference a few years made for him.
