True, but that plane was an Airbus, hence, I said, Airbus.
I didn't mean that failure mode was unique to Airbus, just that an autonomous plane probably would not recover a stall unless it knows it has stalled.

[QUOTE=ClncClarence;3539501]Explain how you believe a fully autonomous aircraft would respond to a runaway trim incident?[/QUOTE

First, Where did you get the idea that anyone is proposing a fully autonomous aircraft? Nobody is proposing that.

What would the aircraft do for a runaway trim? Turn it off. After all, that is what the 747 does.

Both were heavily influenced by poor computer programming (Airbus stall warning going out if airspeed decreases too low, and MAX just being MAX).
Well if they decide to go completely autonomous right out of the gate I think you would be correct. That is not what is being proposed at all.

It is interesting that the military drones don’t seem to be falling out out the sky and they are first generation pilotless vehicles. I think one of the big factors in their success in overcoming malfunctions successfully is that the “pilot” is not being subjected to the forces inside the aircraft.

Ahem, yes they are. Their failure rate in 2018 was approximately 1 per 1000 flight hours. That is million times worse than acceptable.

No discussions are really warranted for fully autonomous operations until we actually see the right seat disappear with only a left seat with a sleeper behind it for long haul ops. Perhaps include a RJ lavatory on pax birds adhering to the two person concept. Long haul 4 and 3 person flights down to 2. That’s how it will begin. Definitely lost a global hawk back in the day and current drones are very simple compared to the airliner situation with much less room for systems. Maybe they include a self destruct button, probably not included on a commercial liner.
