Kalitta Pilots CBA update
#551
What might have been the mins at your outfit when you were hired? What did you previously operate prior to the 74? Just questions as times have been up and down cyclic as usual and since the viral debacle is pretty much over the grade down is steeper. Granted, with a recession looming perhaps it will level off again. Doesn’t take much to veer off course, but it doesn’t take much just to use those brakes. Familiarization wise, nothing like seeing air refueling for the first time during your upgrade, but smart outfits let folks try it a few times ahead of their upgrade and the results were undeniably better at the training unit. Taxiing isn’t air refueling by any means but seeing/trying anything beforehand doesn’t hurt. Either way it will be all ok, stay vigilant.

I know that you’re not talking to me…. But like you, I flew heavies for many years before becoming a Whale driver. However, sitting in the right seat for a few years should give a pretty good picture of what the oversteer looks like in a big plane. Can’t see it being a big deal. Not that a little practice couldn’t possibly hurt though…
< Response to below > since I had time.
Bypassed for quite awhile and until this art33 totally dissipates the right seat continues to be advantageous with BLG vs being low fruit on the Capt seniority list being hit or miss. Looking forward to it when it’s time to pull the trigger when lifestyle priorities are maintained.

Totally agree and bottom line none of us really care more than me (sarcasm). Take away my steering and it’s time to move left and sign the paperwork. We do most everything else now like others do I suppose. Maybe the stretching/reaching to the other side is good for me. Time to let Kalitta have their thread back. Apologies.

In all seriousness tho, back to the negative stuff. Kalitta is in a position that is not enviable. Extremely high turnover rate near 20% for the year, which is high for just over 700 pilots. With nearly every one of the majors, and most of the all the big cargo companies coming out with amazing opportunities with new TA’s. And what do we have? We have a displacement bid email coming out for the 767’s. Now is the time to move on. With the sodimizer taking all the fun out of our layovers, long duty days, constantly worn out and broken equipment. Enough is enough. Capts with up to or more then 10 years on property are leaving. Now that some airline will offer positive space tickets to and from work, that dog won’t hunt anymore here at Kalitta.
I haven’t flown with one guy that is happy and wants to stay, and 90% of the crews I’ve flow with have apps out, cjo’s, or an actually class date with one the big leagues. Moral is in the crapper. A few dudes I know have been stuck out on their day off because the company was legal to make them dh on company planes to the lower 48 on their last day and the planes broke and they got hosed through various forms of misfortune. They literally have no clue what is going on in SOD.
It’s frustrating for crews when you have your alarm set and see the plane is coming in from china super late and your rest plan is blown out of the water. We have to call the van company in panc to figure out for ourselves what time we need to be picked up bc Astro is always wrong.
But conditions have deteriorated enough for me to update applications. Especially since they wanna hire out of work foreign pilots and possibly sponsor their visas. Yayyyy team??!! Hell of a way to be all American. But go on ahead, keep hiring guys that need a polished up resume with a fresh 777 or 747 type rating to help propel them over the finish line for a legacy or big brand box hauler. Since mgmt has no clear idea on how to properly fix the problem, and make this a better place.

Sadly Catching Waves pretty much summed it up. Those being displaced off the 767 will not be affecting anyone else on other fleets apart from the 6 or so senior pilots on the 76. Attrition is basically overtaking hiring. Management see iron moving and money coming in but seem to have zero handle on trying to resolve the problem. The now famous quote from the DO that basically said, don't like it you're free to leave seems to be working. CS play games to get the flights out.
They have been trying to produce more 14 day lines but the downside is you will be on constant min rest, over guarantee and banking a great paycheck but you'll feel it physically and mentally, (I wonder if CS watch the FRM videos we have to??!!).

You’re also a noob in the airline world and you don’t seem to understand that the way it’s done at Atlas is rare. Most airlines don’t allow the FO to taxi. Most airlines don’t have tillers for the FO. The fact that Atlas 747’s do have FO tillers and they allow you to taxi is a bit of a rarity. It’s also been a topic of discussion in the training department for many years longer than you’ve been around.
Atlas has seriously considered not allowing FO’s to taxi to “align the fleets” with the fleets that don’t have FO tillers. IMO, that’s not a good decision. Expecting somebody to go from the right to left seat…never having taxied a 747…is ridiculous. The tiller is there, so it should be allowed. If there is no FO tiller, then it’s not even a consideration obviously.
Allowing an FO to taxi helps them learn how to taxi such an airplane prior to upgrade…and, more importantly, gives them some responsibility under supervision. That’s what being a Captain is all about….supervising and mentoring the next generation of Captains.

it’s actually the way many carriers do it, outside of the US. The PF normally taxies the aircraft. It’s Airbus, and now Boeing (on fleets with tillers on both sides), stock SOP.
