Home based, there are no planes for K4 in YIP, Kalitta Charters (737 and smaller jet ops) is there yes, but not the K4 747 / 777 operations, I dont think one has landed there for years. You are home based and they position you to the trip from your home airport on a paid ticket (mostly delta is used) , that could be anywhere in the USA and sometimes means you have to travel on your last day off. (this bit we all hope gets changed in the latest round of negotiations) . Day 1 starts at 0000z which means you normally need to be airlined to work in the afternoon of your last day off. Mostly we see LAX, JFK, CVG, ORD or MIA as the day one places... but it can be anywhere really especially with military flights.

I have been retired for a while so this might have changed. It used to be that everyone was based in YIP. Then when they moved you to and from home it was NOT a commute TO work and taxable, but a commute FOR work and not compensation (think Atlas),which would be taxable. Also the reason why if you went to training from home you used to have to get there on your own verses if you traveled to training from the line.

Default What has the Flying been like for 2023

I have heard that the 747 flying is unpredictable. I’m curious how the overnights are. Are there 2-3 days layover in China, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Or is almost every night a min rest other than your 7th day when you are on the road for 2 weeks. I’m really curious how the layovers have been recently since I have a class date for October.

74 layovers are good, we get Hong Kong, Incheon, Brussels, Leipzig, you will see AMS, sometimes UK airports. a lot of Poland , Bahrain, Dubai , HNL, we also visit Guam now and then and Pago Pago and a lot of PANC . USA is MIA, JFK,, LAX and CVG the most. There is also Santiago and VCP in the south as there is always a plane doing Sth America runs. We never see Singapore in the 747, rarely Australia also. Rare to get min rest... but it happens (and is actually better than the 24 hr layover) , normally you see 24-32 hrs most places sometimes more. China the most common place we overnight at the moment is ZGGG but its rare to be more than 24 hrs there...but nice hotel and location at the Crowne Plaza. The overnights are really variable and you see them a couple of days out on your schedule,..most of the time your 1 in 7 is much longer than 24 hrs, mine tomorrow is a 48 hr stay in RKSI.

As I understand it, I am only restricted from PIC duties because I do not meet ICAO requirements for that. I’ve done many Mexico/Canada trips under part 121 with a restricted atp acting as SIC. Does this have to do with augmented operations? I am not familiar.

No they wont hire you until you meet the full atp requirements. Unless you have significant jet time the training will not be easy
