Default JetBlue Flights into JFK last night

I was told by ATC last night that all and only JetBlue flights were canceled going to JFK last night. Anybody know why?? I can only guess weather, and no gate space.

Yea that sounds scary, i'd hate to be stuck on a plane with no air or food for that long. As much as I like jetblue I really don't like what happened there.

A JetBlue spokesperson said, "We did not do our best ... no excuse for why we allowed those passengers to sit on the tarmac." The spokesperson adds that a total of six aircraft were waiting for departure at JFK today and were eventually cancelled. They say the problem was that there were no free gates to bring the planes back to, that's why they had to rely on buses.
Airport officials say if JetBlue had told them that they had people needing rescuing on planes out on the tarmac, they would have sent buses. They said JetBlue didn't call the airport to tell them that until after 3 p.m.

They definetely just lost some passengers for good.

I've never understood how this could happen. The closest this ever happened to me was a few months ago, after landing at our destination, we waited 1.5 hours for a gate. Can you imagine waiting 9 hours prior to take off? WTF? After 3 wouldn't you just demand portable stairs or taxi over to the terminal area and use the slides if necessary? I don't know. Slides would be difficult to authorize.....Still, something would have to be done. NINE HOURS? Holy $h!t! I would love to hear the tapes of the conversations between the company ops and the aircraft. What were they telling those guys when they had a shift change? "Uh hold on JB xx, I'm going home now." "I'll pass on your question." "Bye."

I wasn't there but I hear PART of the problem was the plane being stuck to the ground, being stuck in line, and not being able to get busses out to the plane. I certainly wouldn't have passengers sliding down the slides into a blizzard onto an icy tarmac though.

We definitely have some major improvement to do on our foul weather operations though.

I was there yesterday when that happened. It was a mess. I came in at 12:30 and there were 8 Jetblue aircraft on the pad waiting for de-ice, with more on the way. At one point IAT was turning planes back from the de-ice pad becuase there was no more space. I had to wait 1.5 hours for a gate, and then 20 minutes for them to clear it with the tractors. It took us 3 hours to turn around becuase of congestion comming in to the IAT rmp. Not to mention some plane movers did not have chains on the wheels, so imagine that joy.

I would love to hear the tapes of the conversations between the company ops and the aircraft. What were they telling those guys when they had a shift change? "Uh hold on JB xx, I'm going home now." "I'll pass on your question." "Bye."

You know, we at Alaska are 75 years old now and sometimes our winter ops are soooo F'd up, you'd think we started flying last year. You would think someone would start the de-ice trucks before the storm to test them but Nooooo!

Well imagine a new airbus sitting there with almost 600 passengers. Gotta figure at least 50 babies screaming.
