Two years ago. Military Vet. Great guy. Apparently just a lot of other stuff I guess. It times that you wish you knew...so you could help? Or just so the person is comfortable enough to speak up.

Who are they to decide this for us?
They are our elected managers - not our rulers. They need to be persuaded to release that information in full transparency, or else they go.

I think he's saying that when you start compiling overworked and under paid along with large hits to fiscal stability it can cause a huge stress on people and they may not handle it in the best way.
You can only wind the rubber band so tight before something happens.

We can't control people but at least we can take away one factor that gives them the reason to go down that path. QOL is so very important. BJ has zero concern for this. It's our responsibility to reform the industry to be better in terms of making it a more normal lifestyle. BJ has some pilots in both seats who are walking around with major baggage on their shoulders and BJ isn't making things better for them (e.g. 18 days of reserve in NYC).
The military has a huge suicide problem too, by the way. Their "solution" is resilience training but it's a total failure. You can't get around the fact these are otherwise normal people reacting to abnormal situations. All we can do is try to improve the externalities (e.g. QOL).
As much as I pick on millennials, I do credit them with being more principled than my generation and the median age of those at BJ. They tend to turn down jobs often and fight for massive workplace reform. At some point all the sacrifices we make as pilots will become obsolete (e.g. crashpads, reserve that requires crashpads) in favor or more equitable workplace benefits. This industry in general has a high suicide rate and externalities are a big factor.

Geez, very sad and sorry to hear. I thought they were rumors but it sounds like a lot of it is real. Take care of each other and be safe. As mentioned by a guy above, it's pretty much taboo in this industry to come out and say 'I need help, I'm overwhelmed, and here's how I feel..."
I guess that's true not just in the airline industry but pretty much everywhere else too.
