It helps if you cry while dumpster diving... that way they know you have feelings. But you'll also have to wear pants that are too tight and accentuate the fact that you may have never actually physically exerted a muscle in your body... ever.

thread creep...it's just that i don't read the other parts of this forum except the jetblue part. i just wanted to point out to everyone who might not have noticed, like i did not notice, that the great tax reform bill signed at the end of last year eliminates all of our pilot deductions.

that has made up a big chunk of my itemized deductions for many years. union dues, medical exams, and per diem stuff...we're talking thousands of dollars in itemized deductions (and i don't make nearly as much as most of the pilots on this board, as a 3 year pay jetblue fo). gone. poof.

maybe they've been complaining about it on other parts of this board, but i hadn't seen it and didn't know that i got screwed so badly by that tax bill until i read about it in alpa magazine, so i thought i'd put this out there for everyone in case other people missed it too.

just to be very clear: this applies to January 1, 2018 going forward. this does not apply to your 2017 taxes. i just finished doing my 2017 taxes a few days ago. i didn't know at the time that it was my final time getting a nice deduction for all those things. sigh.

You’ll likely get back more next year than this year. Not very many folks will be able to itemize and claim all these swoopy pilot deductions you mention anyway, unless they have a mortgage.

If you were able to itemize this year, good for you. But next year, your standard deduction will double, and your personal exemptions will go away, for a net win of reducing your taxable income by about $2K if single, and about $4K if married. You won’t be able to itemize and use your mortgage interest/taxes/insurance, but you won’t need them.

You will also most likely drop into a lower tax bracket, which means less taxes paid throughout the year, so you will be entitled to get less back.

If you are getting a lot back on your taxes, that just means you are having too much taken out monthly. Adjust your W-4 so that you get back $100 or pay the IRS $100, and you will be maximizing your money throughout the year. Giving Uncle Sam an interest-free loan on your hard-earned money is always a lose-lose for the end user.

Someone’s been watching Fox News too much... believe the bull****.

My paycheck got smaller. My deductions are gone... so some guy can have an eighth yacht.

That’s weird since nearly everyone else I talked to had an increase in take home pay. Strange that your the ONE guy who isn’t getting more.

He never looked at his automatic deductions to planned parenthood.

Maybe he/she is like me. My paycheck went up slightly but overall my taxes will go up as well. So I'll need to adjust my withholdings so I don't have a to pay in come April 2019. People who decide not to have a hag at home or screaming snot producers get hosed with this tax bill. My state just gave additional tax credits for kids. Oh the joy to pay for everyone's else's brats.

I'll make out quite a bit better under the new plan, because I just barely scraped together enough deductions to itemize this year. Doubling the expected deduction and lowering the rates means a lower tax bill. Also, filing next year should be a snap, relatively speaking. The main hassle is gathering information for deductions, mainly charitable and the 2% misc deductions, the latter of which have been eliminated entirely for what I typically claim. What's not to like?
