Please don't suggest to management that we are expecting something along the line of the Alaska award. It is underwhelming in many aspects and is unacceptable.

We will not go to arbitration unless the membership requests it. That won't happen.

The Alaska pilots didn’t lose anything. They just didn’t gain much in some areas. They did get significant hourly raises and better contributions to retirement. The award helps us. Just not as much as it could have.
Agreed. It raises the bar.

As far as binding arbitration - its pretty risky business. Can you imagine if the arbitrator ruled to not increase wages at all? They would be up the creek without a paddle and that is not worth it.

Yeah arbitration was already in their CBA. I’m not sure why they would ever agree to put that in there though!

It was agreed to to put a time line on merger integration. This was to prevent wage stagnation like you saw at AWA/USA merger. 10 years of stagnant contract and no SLI.

This was by no means perfect but at least they can move forward.

Reading last nights negotiating update, it made it sound like they'll be negotiating without the mediator this month and December. Anyone know if this is just to resolve final language on existing agreements or actual negotiating sessions on open issues?

Yeah, the lack of scope is a big deal. But at least the rates are in now, so we have all of the numbers to compare with for our own negotiations.

Dunno. The first time the emails mentioned meetings without the mediator, they said that they were to clean up language in other sections. My friend who was an ALPA negotiator at his last airline said that this is a very positive sign that they are close to a deal, and they want to get the language as close as possible so once the money sections are complete the rest of the language is ready to go.

It's like reading tea leaves. lol

Yeah it's very hard to gauge how things are going reading those emails. I have no idea if they can even negotiate without the mediator.

As someone who lived through fairly crappy (7 year) negotiations before, those emails are positive. They are making progress. That’s good, no matter what. We aren’t on ice. We aren’t at an impasse.

I’m researching the question about negotiating without the mediator. Unsure. -Edit- Yes they can negotiate without the mediator.

House cleaning on final language of sections already TAed. This is also not first mention.
