I have heard about the mythical book! And along with it a secret place where captains are grown and nurtured. One day one will rise and bring promise and rule benevolently over the airline. The place - as revealed to me by the great oracle - is called gateway 7.

You can't bid for long call. It's supposed to be issued if you have 4 or more days of reserve, but it's typically converted to short call. At least that's how life goes on the bus, the 190 seems to be better staffed, potentially meaning more long call. I base this off of years old anecdotal evidence. I'm sure those currently on reserve can provide more up to date information.
If you don't expect to get long call then you'll never be disappointed.

Long call is charity handed out by crew scheduling when the operation is over staffed.

We have long call and pre release days. And it is used...mostly during the slow months like this. More on the 190 FO side. Captains get it too, albeit less than FOs. Bus guys don't get it as much. These slow months are money if you don't like to work. I have had 4 long call days and 3 pre-release days so far this month (2 pre release before the month started and 1 on my most recent reserve block). The only 2 days I worked were around the snow storm. Ill either fly or be short call only 5-8 days this month. I will have 17 days off plus 5-8 days of long call (that I pull from my house) depending on how this next week and a half goes. Reserve sucks in the busy months though.

So I went from "great news honey, I've got tomorrow off and can watch the kids" to "crap, I've got to get 6 hours of sleep and commute up in the morning.....sorry honey"
BTW, the one time I got long call, I was called at 17:00 and advised I was going on SCR at 06:00. Too early to commute, so I had to rush to the airport and commute up the night before.
Of course the key is not commuting.
Reserve is reserve and I know reserve sucks, but it's really not much better than my old regional. If any.

I have been assigned long call 14 times. 13 times I was called at 12:01 AM the night before and converted to short call at 14:00 the next day.

In my time on RSV I can only recall 1 LCR reserve day. The other times they were converted to shortcall.
Flying on short call is hit or miss. IMO those on AM RSV will fly more than PM rsv.

Wow. Good for you! I'm JFK320 reserve guy and we don't get see 1/2 of that. And only one month in the last 7 or so months did we get a PRL day... JFK 320 reserves don't ever seem to be staffed where we should be.
