Question for any Guard/Reserve guys:

The FSM doesn't explain (adequately) the difference between the 5 types of mil leave - MIC, MCX, MIL, MLX, and MSL.

I get that MSL is just unplanned leave you take after the schedule is out. But am I reading this correctly that MCX and MLX will only guarantee me the days off, but that PBS will try to build me a full flying schedule too? What is the purpose of "virtual credit" that is mentioned in the FSM?

anyone have any experience with one vs. the other helping or hindering a line from being awarded?

Kind of.

After the first come first serve window opens you can call and have your vacation split into 2 parts and you can put those 2 parts wherever you want on your schedule.

It can be split in any 2 parts but 2 parts only. 1-6 , 2-5, 3-4,.

Move those 2 parts to current days off you know you dont want to pickup anything on. Be careful you can only move them once. Then you are free to pick up on your original vacation days.

Its the best way to maximize PTO if you are certain there will be trips to pick up.

You use 24.5 hours and get 35 pay, and still able to fly an entire schedule.

Better than PTO sell back because you get full 401k benefits and profit sharing, with the risk being that there might not be anything to pick up. So do it in a month you know there will be open trips.

The MIL Leave request form does a decent job of explaining the different types of MIL leave bidding options. I've only used MIC and MSL. MIC is your best option if you have multiple days of MIL duty coming up that are easily preplanned (TDY/Training). It adds 3hrs of virtual credit per MIL day and assigns min days off IAW the FSM. This at least gives you a chance of meeting the min credit window and getting a line. However, this credit does not apply to any swaps (an issue in my opinion), so any schedule improvements or swaps require swapping into a pairing of higher credit, which results in less schedule flexibility. I'd recommend MSL for any UTA/FTP training due to the fluid nature of Mil scheduling and the aforementioned lack of flexibility. Feel free to PM me.

Was there a break down of dates for upcoming classes? I thought I saw someone post something of the sorts.

I would and may PM you, but I'll say this here on the off chance someone actually uses the search function on this thread...

I think I get virtual credit now - thanks for the clarification. The 3 hours of virtual credit awarded with MIC and MCX means that PBS will attempt to award you a line by giving you the month's divisor, minus the number of virtual hours given by mil leave. With MIL and MLX, you don't get any credit for the days you are on leave, and PBS will try to award you a full line of flying that credits the number of hours required by the month's divisors. Is that right?

Based on that it sounds like MIL would actually be useful for a line holder who just want off 2 days for drill or AFTPs, since it would still give you a full month's credit. MIC seems to make more sense for a junior guy who stands to make more money on orders than flying for the company on year 1 pay. That way he gets his military duty, and doesn't have to sit reserve for 18 days on top of that.

I've been trying to avoid using MSL, to avoid the appearance of using mil leave to tweak my schedule if I don't like it. Have you ever gotten any feedback about using MSL too much?

Thnaks for the help!

I'm not privy if those numbers have changed any but that was posted earlier.

*Edit: just realized that it was recently posted that 4 started on the 01/06 and apparently now 8 slated for 01/20.

Those numbers have changed. They are lower. I'm at a loss now, jan six had 8 or 4 in it.... Srry I'll clarify tomorrow.

And yes lower numbers due to lower than expected attrition.

About 100 recalls, 80 ish AA and about 20 ish yonited. Few are expected to return. After that, very few retirements until about 2025 and it really doesn't pick up until 2032. Less than 20 a year for the next 4 years.

To be honest, I'm still new myself and have used MSL on a limited basis. The times I have used it, the company has been very accommodating. I'm with you on not highlighting yourself or worse yet, burning a bridge for guardsmen/reservists still wanting to come to jB, but the vibe I get is as long as you are not abusing the system and giving reasonable notice they have no issue with MSL drops.

Your assessment on MIL vs MIC is spot on. Depending on what your training requirements are with the military, MIL over MIC may make sense. For those of us with a 6-8 sortie/month requirement though, using MIL would either place you on permanent reserve or produce a crushing schedule. Something to be aware of also, is that MIC/MIL days are not considered work per the bidding system. Thus, I have many times ended up with a stretch of 6 days of reserve followed by 5 days of MIL duty resulting in 11 straight days of work. Just something to keep in mind.
