There isn't a ton of information out there, specifically, if there are any FOs that have been selected yet and what we should expect.
Just looking to see if you have any updates after you applied. I am considering applying for the RTP program also.

Are you a CFI? Anything that made you stand out? Do you have an ATP?

Why is JB hiring and offering VILs at the same time?

Makes sense if there is a relative excess of CAs I suppose.

So they can flex staffing not only for delivery delays and engine issues but also for the slow months. They know these issues will eventually get resolved and this gives them the ability to sideline, payoff and put on ice the most expensive pilot for Sep/Oct/Jan/Feb and have the cheaper pilots earn the bulk of the credit hours. It’s pretty smart!

Are the VILs only for certain longevity pilots? And why not stop hiring at the same time.

They haven't offered them yet, so we don't know exactly.

Some things I do know, our annual system bid sucks for us, but also for JB. They have to offer positions for the entire following calendar year. This one that just closed in Aug had a lot of A220 CA positions, and I think they found out about additional A220 delivery delays after the bid closed. I also think they found out about additional A321 NEO issues post award as well.

Finally, the company wanted to move a lot of crews from the NE to Florida, but didn't want to displace anyone. So they offered a lot of Florida CA upgrades expecting a lot of NE guys to bid for them, but the NE guys largely didn't take the open CA positions, so they were filled by more junior Florida FOs. All the Florida CA positions got filled, but most of the NE CAs stayed where they were, which means they have a lot more CAs than they wanted/hoped.

For clarity, the company posted negative numbers for the NE A320 CA positions, so they didn't have to backfill anyone who left. But they weren't displacing anyone.

So they have more CAs than they wanted (VILs) and still need to hire FOs to backfill those that took upgrade and to balance CA/FO staffing for planned flying.

Copy that. I’m expecting spirit to strike an agreement on VILs or stop hiring and let attrition handle it, and if that doesn’t happen I’m expecting furloughs

They will obviously be awarded in seniority order so the effect is the “most expensive” pilots will be able to take advantage …..why stop hiring? These are temporary over staffing conditions in certain airframes that will be resolved. If your 4 brand sparkling new 220s scheduled for Feb delivery get delayed until June but then the backlog gets alleviated and arrive in late April I ask you when would you throw a halt to all new hire training? Or would you continue to hire knowing the frames will come when they come and approach the union for a temporary mechanism to flex the active pilot list on a month by month basis!

The current VIL language has not been agreed on, but during COVID the VILs were entirely company discretion. There was no contractual staffing model or ALPA approval required. If the company had 15 extra JFK 320 Captains and 20 extra BOS 190 FOs in March, they just offered 35 VIL lines - 15 JFK 320 CA and 20 BOS 190 FO. You could only bid for a VIL slot if they were available for your specific base/seat/equipment.
