Why don't you come up and introduce yourself next time instead of hiding behind a screen name? I'm happy to have this discussion in person.
Supporting the union means voting in elections, going to meetings, filling out surveys, and paying your dues. If you'd rather wear someone wear a lanyard than do those things, you do not truly want a functional union.

Southerner to be honest man you strike me as someone who enjoys arguing a counterpoint just for the sake of the argument. That's fine we don't all have to get along. You've had this online persona dating back to your ASA/XJT days and posting on the Pipe. That's my theory as to why you don't wear the lanyard. You enjoy going against the grain of the majority. Again that's fine. That's your choice. It's also our choice to tell you you're wrong.
Will you hold a sign during an informational picket if your MEC asks you to?

The lanyard is not a huge priority of the MEC they have more important things to work on. But it's such a simple request by them to show unity. You seem to be a supporter of ALPA if you do all those things you mentioned. So why no lanyard? I can tell you this, fair or not, you are being judged by your fellow pilots as a non supporter of your union.

Your union has asked you to wear the lanyard Southerner. If you don't you can only say you partially support OUR Union, at best. I'm guessing no bag tag either. Contract-above-all right Southerner?

Very weak rebuttal. Congratulations on being able to happy-think your way into being satisfied with being the worst compensated major airline pilot in our peer set.

It is true that I enjoy arguing for the sake of providing a counter point. It's not good when people live in an echo chamber with no opposing points of view.
And yeah, I'm not the type to do something just because everyone else is doing it. I have zero respect for people who just do whatever the majority do just to be a follower. Even worse, I have contempt for those non-members who don't support ALPA, and yet don't have the backbone to stand by their decision, yet decide to wear the lanyard to "fit in."
I may decide to wear the lanyard someday, but the more people push, the less likely it is. I said as much in my last ALPA survey, and I've told the MEC the same thing in person.

What rebuttal do you suggest? You've made it clear that you don't understand my position, and you disagree. There's not much else to say to you.

You either support your fellow pilots or you do not. It's obvious which camp you're in, despite your claims otherwise. Actions speak much louder than words.

It's very difficult at this point to get anyone to wear the lanyard if they're not already. Believe me I've tried. Those that aren't are making a statement counter to the majority of this group. I think the problem most of us have is that it makes us nervous where on the spectrum of support does this person fall. Will they vote for any TA put in front of them? Will they support the MEC come picket time? And the biggest question, will these people walk the line come strike time? These are all fair questions that non lanyard pilots should be asked. If they have the right answers then so be it.

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
I would be stunned if anyone would actually cross the line, member or not. Maybe if they were near retirement or something.
