I bid the 190 intentionally when I got hired. Spent 2 months on reserve and then could hold a line that satisfied my needs. The VDA’s were plentiful. You gain seniority in base quickly. I remember staffing getting so short, CS would cold call me asking to pick anything and it was VDA pay. Good crews, and the airplane itself was good to fly.
But…SYR overnights get old 😂 You would have trips that never left the state of NY. And the pay separation just becomes too much after year 2. That’s when it’s time to bid over.
Honestly, if the pay was the same, I’d probably still be on that aircraft.

With all the 190s not completely gone until 2025, I would expect the announcement of BOS 190 closure in next year August annual bid. So we probably will offer Bos 190 in newhire until mid next year, est.

Pardon my ignorance, as I'm just preparing to interview. Does "SQ" stand for Special Qual, as in international flying? Would that even be desirable as a New Hire? I am far more concerned with what I can credit in a given month. Thanks!

Put it this way… as a new hire doing that, obviously on reserve, the company also considers you a trained 320 pilot. Therefore after say after all the Europe flights leave, there’s this wonderful SDQ redeye turn in open time and you’re still legal for it….yeah. Basically as an SQ during your reserve availability, you’re on the hook not only for the SQ flying, but anything else in there they can dump on you as well and they are usually redeyes.

This allegedly came about when they had to cancel a LHR leg because of no crews because they burned an SQ reserve on a domestic trip. That particular leg had Robins mother on board.
Of course, your mileage may vary…
