Default Bases

How's it going everyone! Currently a CFI in the PDP about to reach minimums. Wanted to get a pulse check on the current state of flying across the different crew bases. I would love to be Boise based but assume that is extremely senior for QX? If we lived in Boise, would I fly at all on reserve once I was able to hold it?
On the flip side looking at what the commute / QOL would be to live in Boise but be Seattle based. Trying to decide if that would be worth it or if my wife and I would be better off looking at SEA or PDX.

I was told at a career fair last month that training should start to see an uptick, hoping that is the case. Thanks for any input!

Well as someone who’s been here for a year and now just about to get Seattle based, I would say you won’t have to worry about being Seattle based out of training. It’s by far the most senior base for FOs currently. If Boise is what you’re looking for, you won’t have to fight too many people to get there. As for flying on reserve, someone based there may have to chime in to to give you the details on that. My biggest recommendation is, if you can live in base, choose that. The commuting and crash padding isn’t great QOL. But that’s an airline wide philosophy. Live in base = Higher QOL.

It’s around 3 years to hold Seattle as the plug on reserve. Probably about 4 years to become a line holder in SEA or PDX. Reserve time in any base is north of 2 years. You’ll have the seniority to hold captain before you’ll be a line holding FO at QX. This place is plagued by PNW locals who think the PNW and QX are gods greatest gifts and just camp out in the right seat. Error group has completely screwed over junior folks at QX for years to come. Meanwhile you can go to Skywest and be a line holder immediately out of training and you’ll actually fly east of Montana. If you want to sit around and never (and I mean never) fly on reserve and completely stop your career progression in its tracks come on over.

I'm in the Horizon PDP and also the cadet program at Skywest. I appreciate your comment and this information concerns me, as I'd been thinking Horizon was my first choice. Just curious, what did the company do to cause this? Is it a result of the retiring of the Q400? I'm still a year away from minimums but will definitely be keeping an eye on this situation...

You all gonna get 1900’s? Or bring back the Q400 for Hawaii ops?

Whoever posted this is being a bit extreme and probably commuting to reserve in Seattle. You can easily hold a line within a year out of GEG or MFR with no issues.
