Great Lakes Hiring?
#72
I applied at Lakes a couple of years ago. It took about 3 months from the time I applied to the time I got called for an interview. I heard nothing in between. Interview was pretty laid back. No sim ride at all. Tech with a Captain and HR from someone else. I did get offered the job in Feb 2009. Didn't take it, but left my info on file. They called again in June 2010 and I turned it down. Couldn't take the pay. Everyone I talked to that flew there said the pilot group is great and the flying is incredible! I just couldn't commute from Atlanta for reserve for 14,400 per year.
Good luck to those who take it! You will have to teach yourself during training!

Great Lakes Training???
I have a few questions regarding Great Lakes training, I just scheduled my interview for the Dec 6th and I haven't been able to find any old threads.
1. What is the length and location of the training
2. What is the training pay, schedule, and what accomadations (or lack thereof) can I expect?
3.The 15 month training contract, I understand it's purpose for FOs, but will there be an ADDITIONAL contact when you upgrade and get a PIC type?
4. I'm walking in with 1400hrs and ATP written in hand, is it unreasonable to expect to be able to qualify for pre-screening for upgrade in 6 months?
Thanks in advance,
MPC

Historically, GLA has upgraded rather quickly but 6months isnt gonna happen. Plan on being an FO for min 1yr. If you make it through training and the crumby pay, it can be a great stepping stone. Just wasn't going to work for me with school loans (former ERAU )

2) You'll be paid nothing until you pass IOE, 4-6 weeks. Accomodations are at the Plains Hotel, probably the worst hotel in the system, double occupancy, twin beds.
3) No additional contract upon upgrade.
4) Yes. Expect to spend a minimum 18-24 months in the right seat. There is little movement and a huge backlog of FOs waiting to upgrade.
My advice, stay away. I was there for 5 years and I can say without reservation that it is a horrible company to work for. The airplanes are falling apart and its only a matter of time before something serious happens. Pay sucks, QOL is non-existant. I have nothing good to say about Lakes other than the people you fly with are great. Find a job else where.

1. What is the length and location of the training
For 1900 training: 10 days for indoc, plus 7 days for systems (Sundays off, so the ground sched is mon-sat). Expect a few days to possibly a week (if a large class) before sim. Sim is 6 days. Travel to an outstation for 5 nights of flight training, then checkride. all in all, a month to a month and a week til checkride.
EMB: 10 days indoc, 13 days of systems (sundays off) so plan on being in ground school for 3.5 weeks. Travel to sim in ATL, 2 days CPT, day off, then 6 days of sim. Travel to DEN, then travel to outstation for flight training. 5 days of training (sometimes takes a little over a week depending on aircraft. Usually takes a month and 3 weeks from start to finish (at the most)
2. What is the training pay, schedule, and what accomadations (or lack thereof) can I expect?
No training pay, hotel is provided in groundschool, sim, any DEN overnights before training, and during training.
Schedule: see above. Sundays off, groundschool Mon-Sat. 8-5.
Accomodations: 2 people to a room. CYS - The HISTORIC plains hotel. Not gonna lie, its old, could be better. Sim B1900: Sim usually in Greeley, CO. Aim's community college provides lodging in their guest rooms. Not too bad. Kitchenettes, not too bad.
EMB: ATL Drury Inn. Very nice! Especially by our standards.
3.The 15 month training contract, I understand it's purpose for FOs, but will there be an ADDITIONAL contact when you upgrade and get a PIC type?
No additional contract, just the first you sign on the first day of class.
4. I'm walking in with 1400hrs and ATP written in hand, is it unreasonable to expect to be able to qualify for pre-screening for upgrade in 6 months?
I wouldn't expect IMMEDIATELY to be pre-screened, but after 6 months if you feel you are ready, have the time, have studied and are prepared for upgrade, you can put in your upgrade bid. Some have the time but don't put in their bid, then complain when we don't upgrade. If you are early, and your bid comes up, you may just get it. It's all about timing. Can't say what it would be now, but I'd say at least a year to a year and a half before the seniority would allow. Hard to tell, could be a little longer if CA's don't leave. Once you put in your upgrade bid, you take a Captain training class (2 days) and take the upgrade pretest. Once this is done, once your seniority number comes up, you're in.
Thanks in advance,

Within a 3 month time period many things could have happened to change the circumstances, or maybe the interview was taken to see what the company had to offer, or even for experience. I would look at it as just another open door, though at $9/hr more of a doggie door
