Default Picking your base and aircraft?

When do you get to pick your base and aircraft? First day of ground school? Last day? I am interviewing at AE soon, and if I get the job my only concern would be getting based in SJU.
I am nervous about getting SJU because I don't want to live there down there and really don't want to have to commute down there. If it came down to it I think I would turn it down. I am gonna be commuting from PA or UT and have a family at home. I know life will suck on reserve, but I don't think I could do that. Even MIA would be a stretch.
Also, what is the average age of those in that class? I am 26...is that somewhat senior??

Thanks in advance.

I don't think that you would have to worry about SJU too much (maybe). However, be ready for ORD or NY.

Nobody was expecting SJU ATR in this class. Anything can happen.

I live near SJU and is not my priority geting SJU.

You have to be prepared for anything.

PD: I'm waiting for class assignment.

If you get SJU you simply ride it out until the next bid where your seniority can hold a new base/equipment. Back in 07' they were letting you tell them which base you wanted to get hired into...that is long gone.

As for the age, I dont work there but if my company is any indication I would say you would be closer to the younger side with a few below you in age.

You find out your base/equip on Day 1 of class, so no waiting around in suspense! On the bright side of things, if you were awarded SJU then you would have the ability to transfer to MIA or DFW and could be awarded it before you even leave the schoolhouse. There have been lots of NYC and ORD slots opening lately, so you should have a good shot at that. There have been several in recent classes around age 23 or younger, so you might wind up in the middle of the pack.

What base would you hope for ideally?

300 pilots for 2011, but I have heard rumblings of much more than that. Anyone else with credible info on hiring projections?
