Last I heard, the official award is still on the first day of class. For any new-hire, the best advice is to have your preferences written down in priority order. If you are 'Junior', Eagle will make that choice for you.

The QOL comes from the fact of holding a 'regular hard line' sooner instead of the long-term beating of jet reserve.
I mostly agree except for the last sentence. There is a February new-hire that is bidding 7 numbers below the lowest regular hard line holder for August. I count 12 DFA's on the flow plan, awaiting DFE class, that bid lines in August. I also suspect a couple more FO's to bail via the bid that closes tonight. Unless Eagle quits hiring, or reduces ATR flying in DFW, I'd guess DFA reserve drops to less than a year over the next 6 months. But then again, there is no way I'd bet my massive salary on that either
My current suggestion for anyone wanting DFW would be to bid the ATR. You might have to spend some time in SJU or MIA but hopefully able to bid DFW within a few months. There is, however, no guarantee of being DFW based promptly, regardless of equipment choice. This is after all, the airline industry we are talking about.

A great post from one of the other forums
SJU the rock as some of you call it is actually one of the best bases in terms of flight destinations. Its a different kind of flying in that it takes Men and Women and not boys and girls to fly some of the stuff they do down there. Destinations such as Dominica, Tortolla, Haiti will make you a better pilot overall if you can handle the task. The long overnights however are well worth the stress that the ATR may put some through in ground school.
In choosing an aircraft pick the one "like another said" that will give you the best quality of life and that you'll be happy on. From the ATR you can bid up to the Jet however as many a lot more senior than I will tell you, it doesn't work the other way around. The people in San Juan are nice if you come with an open mind and try to learn even a little spanish. If your single its the best base to be stationed at. Some places to stay are La Mancha, Coral Beach, and also Laguna Gardens. Talk to the crew members at the base who've been down there for a while and you will find a lot more options.
Unfortunately most gripe about going to SJU as they hear rumors about many different things, yet they've never experience these interactions for themselves. If you are lucky enough to be assigned SJU learn the international ops and extended overwater stuff. Enjoy St Maarteen 11:00am overnights where you have the whole day on the beach. Go down to Tortolla and fly over Sir Richard Bransons house or Dominica where your flying in a canyon.
The Jet is awesome but if your looking to fly more instead of sitting reserve the ATR is the place to be IMO.

Allow said and done though, people getting hired right now will have longer reserves most likely. DFW will have almost 20 new ATR FOs by November. MIA and SJU will be junior.

I was on reserve for 2.5 years. You only get per diem when you're on duty so that all depends. I think you have to pay 50% of the uniform cost.
