How many hours do you need to get hired on by a major airline?
#2
It varies by airline, although in general, for those airlines currently hiring it's around 3000 - 5000 hours of jet, 4 year degree, lots of jet PIC, internal recomendations, and excellent flying skills. Again, that's in general there are going to be times/experience levels above and below that - and please don't take this as the gospel. There are LOTS of talented pilots out there and not may jobs - airlines can be picky in this market.
