I may not be politically correct, but I'll never be called a hypocrit. Just remember, Jimmy Kimmel did blackface, picked on midgets and had girls with bouncing boobies. Now he thinks he's the epitome of political correctness. Don't be a Jimmy Kimmel.
Bruh, Southwest just called and said they have a spot in class for you tomorrow!

An Alaska pilot here. Can someone remind me of the Hawaiian beard policy and the history? We'd been told all of last year that the Alaska beard policy would be reconsidered when we switched to our new uniforms later this year. We were just told beards aren't going to be approved. Wondering if this has any chance of changing for us if the merger goes through. Thanks!

beards were worn long ago by the native Hawaiians when they first came to Hawaii and everyone is allowed to wear them even women.

It's in the FOM, not the contract so limited protections. It's technically for inter Island only, but plenty of guys in the other fleets have them with no problems. Supposed to be neatly trimmed but a few guys go full on Tom Hanks in Castaway.

I'm guessing the beard teaser was a recruiting/retention carrot, which they no longer think they need for the time being at least.

I could see AS keeping the inter-island allowance. But then actually enforcing it for everything else.

To be honest, I suspect their reluctance isn't beards per se, it's the enforcement aspect... they definitely don't want pilots looking like SOF operators or Grizzly Adams, and don't want to be chasing them around the terminal with rulers.

Not sure where you got interisland only. It has never been fleet specific. This exerpt is from the Hawaiian Airlines Uniform Guidelines.

Pilots:
• Partially grown beards or mustaches are not allowed.
• Closely trimmed sideburns, mustaches and beards will be permitted providing they are
conservative, neat and clean.
• Pilots must be aware that wearing a beard and/or mustache may prevent a proper seal
between the face and the Flight Deck Oxygen Mask.

I personally have a beard and my wife likes the way I look with one. But, I am not willing to lose any negotiating capital during a merger to keep it.
