With the hiring scenario and Amazon contract I wouldn't be concerned with CJO's expiring any time soon. They're gonna need the bodies. I can almost guarantee they'd be very flexible on class dates... Hold out for the Amazon basing as opposed to commuting from the East Coast.

It's funny you guys call us "fan boys." I am actually a fan of Hawaiian Airlines and I genuinely mean that. I love your product and traveling on you guys. Some of my very dear friends are flying for you guys - both as pilots and as flight attendants. Having said that, I didn't apply to Hawaiian when I was looking because of your first year pay and there were more suitable employment options elsewhere in the industry. You mention 717 stays home 365 days? I thought you guys were overnighting now interisland which really made 717 not be nearly as attractive as it used to be, and A321 being your West Coast plane... am I wrong?

In any case, I don't want to see you guys fail. In fact, I want to see you guys lead or at least match the industry leaders. You live and work in one of the most expensive parts of the country, and I hope you don't settle for subpar contract on account of "lucky we live Hawaii", however, concerned by your fleet variety and inefficiencies due to economies of scale, but that's the bean counter problem. If they don't have a problem with it, I say good deal... wish we had some variety here.

I don't know about "far better management." We manage to make money DESPITE our management team, not because of them. And the woke disease is here as well... our new CEO said on CNBC that the two biggest priorities at Southwest Airlines was diversity, equity and inclusion and promoting biofuels.... all of this while we had hard time getting coffee cups on our flights, and hiring pilots. He's still harping on woke nonsense, but at least he's acknowledging that our growth plans require hiring 2100 pilots next year. Now if he'd only get on with the contract....

Do they? I'm sure we'll have another W-2 thread this year... it'd be very cool to see Hawaiian guys of different seniorities share what they made. Or anyone for that matter. Those threads have always been highly informative for me when I was looking, and also very helpful when it comes to career decisions and these days whether to jump ship or not depending on one's priorities.

As for the fanboy comments... I explained it above. I truly am a fan. I really like your flying and your choices of aircraft at Hawaiian. So yeah, I am a fan. I'm not as big of a fan of a 737, but in the end, it's all about the numbers for me and where I want to live. Probably same with you. I am stoked that you're happy and I truly wish more people in this career were actually happy and showed up to work happy. I don't think any Southwest pilot wonders why you're happy there. Dude, you work for Hawaiian Airlines.... you can live in Hawaii if that's your thing and not commute. You SHOULD be happy! Friendly ribbing and good rivalry should rule the day. Occasional smack talk is cool and should be taken as nothing more than fun. If one can't take it, it should be their own problem. I personally chuckled when we had that big shark hanging on the wall with SWA color tail chasing smaller fish painted like Hawaiian and Alaska. It was taken down because some people got butthurt over it. I think that was BS. I know had I been at Hawaiian or Alaska, something like that would only motivate me more... but I guess it's far easier to cry someone's feelings got hurt and what's worse, us actually taking it down. Oh well...

Bottom line, it's all in good fun. Keep on talking smack from time to time and we'll respond in kind, and know it's just friendly rivalry. However... push come to shove, I know we would all happily walk your picket line with you supporting you.
99% of the time, the 717/321 sees their family 365 days out of the year. Home Christmas morning or night. Hopefully spelling out for you doesn’t make you butt hurt Mister Sharknado ;-)

Any idea who the target audience was? Seems odd to compare load factors between 128 and 175 seat aircraft.

I’m guessing this is looking at the total number of seats serving the route, not on each particular flight.

Southwest is losing more money on these routes than Hawaiian. Of course, the question for southwest is more opportunity cost than segment profitability.

Could be a load of crap, but I’ve heard repeatedly that SW only needs about 25 pax per flight to break even on inter-island.

with $39 fares, that probably doesn’t even pay for the crews wages. Add 2-4k pounds of fuel and there’s no way that’s accurate.

As the only competitor interisland it makes sense to compare load factors regardless of seat capacity. The 737 max is definitely not the right aircraft for the market.

The Max 8 is not the right aircraft...and we're waiting for the max 7 of which i think we ordered 250? Using the Max 8 though is less painful given the price we are getting them for. Makes the CASM math work out a little more favorable. Take 15% of our RASM out of the market once we get the preferred AC out there and then lets see that comparison.
